My Fallen Angel

Chapter Thirty-Three: Long Enough

I didn't understand.
"Why does he sparkle?" I asked in confusion.
"That's what the sun does to him," CC explained to me. "It's why he avoids the sun."
"Why does it do that to him?"
"Because his skin is like marble."
"Why is it like marble? This doesn't make any sense." I frowned, frustrated.
Ashley chuckled.
We were all in the front of the bus, watching one of the DVDs the guys had about a "vampire" who sparkles and doesn't like giant dogs for some reason.
I sighed, leaning my head back on Ashleys chest where he sat beside me, arm curled around my waist above the blanket I had thrown over me. He was warm, and was keeping the chill out of my bones.
CC sat on my other side, trying to explain the entire movie to me, but none of it made any sense to me whatsoever.
"Why do we even have this movie?" Andy complained from the floor as he texted his woman and played a candy crushing game on his phone.
"I dunno. Some girl left it," CC sighed. "She could probably explain it better. And how have you not seen this, Kenna? It was unbelievably popular for a while. Where you under a rock?"
Well.
I smiled slightly, but didn't answer, feeling Ashley play with my hair sleepily.
I sighed, pressing my face into his chest, unable to hold any interest in their human movie.
I didn't feel completely awful, and a lot of my bruises had healed up. My throat still looked like an animal had taken a chunk out of it, and I think I'd slept more the past couple days then was supposed to be possible.
I glanced as Jake left the bunks and walked through, stepping over Andys lanky legs and towards the kitchen, rambling for some food. Jinxx was in the back, pieces of his conversation with his mortal love drifting to my ears every now and again.
Ashlans hand paused in my hair, and I opened one eye, wondering why; I liked the soothing gesture.
"What is it?" I murmured, raising my head to see he was reading something on his phone.
He tilted it so I could see.
It was a news article on the apartment building Raza and the others lived in. They were calling it a massacre, claiming a wild animal must have gotten inside and killed all twenty-five humans --- men, women, and children.
I covered my mouth.
I should have stopped him, somehow!
But all I had been able to think about at the time had been my own survival, getting out of there and to Andiel.
I'd let so many innocents die.
"Don't," Ashlandil murmured, resuming the stroking of my hair as he guessed my thoughts. "That wasn't your fault. Angels that were in your state couldn't have lasted a minute against a demon his age."
"You've been here longer then he has," I spoke before I thought, and cringed. I hadn't meant that the way it sounded, and I didn't want to insult him after all he had done for me at this point.
I glanced up at his face, but he didn't appear to have hurt feelings.
"I have been here longer, but I haven't done as many awful things as Raza. I'm not that fallen." he said after a moment, his grip tightening on me.
I frowned, a straggle of hair falling in front of my face. Ashley brushed it behind my ear, and leaned forward to give me an easy kiss.
"Don't let it worry that pretty little head of yours," he whispered in my ear, and pressed a kiss to my neck. "There's a lot more important things to be focusing on."
"Like?"
"Like how long do you think it will take them to notice us in the back?"
I felt a smile curve my lips. "Long enough."
