The Puppet Master

Progress

*Emilie's POV*

Progress is a funny word. Progression is even funnier. Word is a funny word too. I was getting side tracked.
Andy was looking at me. Then he was frowning.
"What?" I asked.
He smiled. "I asked what would you like to work on?"
"Oh, sorry, I was dazed-"
"No kidding!" CC interrupts. Ashley glared at him for it.
"As I was saying, I don't mind what we work on. I bow at your fountain of knowledge and put myself in your capable hands." I smiled. Ashley giggled. "Not like that, you pig!" I yelped, laughing too.
When the giggle fest was over, Andy requested that he worked alone with me for the first 8 hours dream time and we spend the next 8 hours working together as a group. Then Jenny and I had the last 2 hours we were all together to mess around.
We were about to split into our groups when I remembered something I wanted to ask. "Hey, none of you happen to know what the font says?"
"The what?" Ashley asked with a frown.
"The font. By the door? Latin inscription?" I raised my arms for the first time that night and pointed to it.

Andy's icy eyes drilled into my skull and in a flash I was sandwiched between him and one of the alcoves. He looked down on me and violently grabbed my wrist.
"OUCH! LET GO, ANDY! YOU'RE HURTING ME!" I screamed.
"YOU'RE HURTING YOURSELF!" He screamed back.
"LET GO!" I yelled again. I felt like a piece of steel. Andy could try melting me with his burning rage, but it'd only temper me, make me sharper and stronger.
I lashed out at him.
"Emilie!" Jenny yelped, Jinxx holding her back as they all looked on.
The pressure around my wrist vanished. Ashley had Andy by the hair and pulled him off of me before getting in between us.
"ANDREW DENNIS BIERSACK!" Ashley snapped, lethally calm. "That is enough. Cool off! We can talk about this rationally instead of blaming her and making the situation worse!"
Andy looked at me. "I'm sorry." He muttered.
"Go. Away." I growled.
Ashley crouched alongside me, wordlessly running his fingertips along the fresh cuts, healing each.
Jinxx finally released Jenny and she threw herself around me, crying for me.

"I think it's best if I work with Emilie for this session." Jake suggested.
"Why can't Ash work with me?" I asked, the words slipping out thoughtlessly. Jake wasn't offended but Ashley stiffened beside me and pulled away as if he was just realizing what he was doing.
"I...uh...have um... things I have to do." He croaked, getting up off the floor and walking off.
I deflated. "The hell is his problem!?"
"Ignore him...he hasn't been himself lately." CC explained.

Jenny reluctantly left me to do one on one training with Jinxx and Jake led me to the observatory. The others had gone to do what they normally did. CC talking to suicidal people, Andy singing for deaf people, Ash visiting terminally ill. I tried not to be jealous.
"So, we are going to work on entering other's minds. I know you disagree with it, but I'm going to convince you it's ok." Jake smiled reassuringly.
"Ok." So my training began.

I milled around the font after group training, studying it's crystalline depths. It didn't make sense!
"What's up?" Jenny cheered.
"It doesn't make sense!" I answered.
"Yeah, Andy going mad like that shocked everyone." She reassured, rubbing my shoulders.
"Not that! The font! The letters on the top make zero sense! The inscription I can't even translate! I think it's written in Wiccan runic. That language doesn't even have the same letters as English and it isn't Hebrew or Chinese. All I have to go on are the letters at the top on the crossbar; A, O, M, O." I sighed in frustration.
"Isn't the main language of the Roman Catholic Church Latin?" She inquired.
"Yes?"
"What are the Latin words for the points of a compass?" She asked slowly. As if she was cautiously approaching a conclusion and was astounded I hadn't caught on.
"Aquilonem, Oriens, Meridiem, Occidens." I rattled off.
"Uh... Em... A, O, M, O." She said slowly.
"Yeah...oh. OH!" I exclaimed, slapping myself on the head as it dawned on me. I moved to the other side so I was stood opposite Jenny, trying to work out how I hadn't seen it before.
Jenny gasped.
"What!?" I asked.
"Look at the font." She whispered in awe.
I looked down. It was glowing. An ancient looking map rippling on the surface of the water, rotating slowly to reveal different countries. As it spun, small red dots became visible.
With a gasp I stepped away and the map disappeared.
I stepped forwards again.
"What...what are the red dots for do you think?" Jenny asked.
"Well, I'm going to hazard a guess based on how few there are and say that this may be a map of people like us."
"Is that even possible!?" She breathed.
