The Puppet Master

Family

I lean my head against the window in the front seat of my smotherer's Nissan Note. My choppy pixie cut is the biggest mess and I haven't been able to straighten it so I have a cow lick on my forehead. Great.
We travel down the motorway, although I don't know which- I haven't a head for roads or directions.
She pulls over at a service station and we grab a McDonald's breakfast. It's early and mostly quiet.
I finish my mini pancakes (I don't eat any of their other breakfasts as a vegetarian.) and leave my smotherer to her bacon and egg McMuffin as I use the ladies bathroom to bring some semblance of order to my hair and do my makeup.
I leave the bathroom and grab myself a Pepsi as well as a copy of the latest Kerrang, seeing as I've almost finished the book I'm on.
"That's £4.95." The clerk says with a bored expression. Ugh, WH Smiths are so overpriced. I pay up.
We walk out of the service station and are greeted by the stench of chain smokers. Because I really want to get cancer from second hand smoke.... gross.
We get in the car and my smotherer tries to spark a conversation, so I just put on my headphones and pretend I didn't hear, letting Motionless In White consume me.

I feel a gentle shaking of my shoulder who knows how many hours later.
"Where're we?" I ask whilst taking in my surroundings.
"Manchester airport." she replies.
I sit up, musing my hair slightly to get my usual "effortless" rocker look. "Why?"
She says nothing and gets out the car.
I follow, my combat boots connecting to the concrete.
The wind stabbs through my tights. Shorts were a bad idea. I probably look like a junkie-hooker waiting on someone trafficking in their next fix on one of the incoming flights.

I hate airports. I stand in the lobby area, using the free wifi on my Samsung galaxy phone to listen to an interview with Ashley Purdy, and my mom asks some clerk a bunch of questions. I don't even care anymore.
She leaves the desk and beckons me with 2 fingers.
I turn off my music and slip my headphones into my bag before following.

I don't ask any questions so I doesn't really click until I see a Hispanic woman and her daughter clinging to a man in army uniform and sobbing as she whispers in Spanish.
A grab my mom's turquoise sweater sleeve and she turns her hazel eyes on me.
"Mummy?" I whisper. She stops entirely.
"They're both coming home in one piece." she responds.
Then I see him. There's no mistaking that slender yet muscular build with hazel eyes matching my own.
"CLARENCE!?" I scream, sprinting for him.
"EMMIE!?" He yells, dropping his bags and running too.
"CLAR!" I yell again God knows how many times before I reach him.
I leap onto him and we both crash down, his eyes soaking hair as he kisses my forehead. "My sweet baby sister all grown up." He whispers.
Meanwhile my mom silently cuddles my dad.
"Hello Audrey." he says.
"Hello Damon."
"DADDY!" I yell like a child at Christmas, throwing my arms around him. We snuggle together. The four of us crying, my dad's hands stroking both my hair and my mother's blond curls.
And in that moment, I am whole, because my brother and father have come home in one piece instead of a coffin, and nothing else matters.
