School of the Damned

Chapter Five: I'm Not Dead, I Only Dress That Way

-Andy's POV-

Ashley was pretty cute, especially when he giggled as we strode through the halls, back out the front door, and we were both laughing by the time we were out.
“Are we even allowed to be out here?” He asked.
“Do you care?”
“Not really. I think there’s a pond not too far off if we keep walking. It’s still on the grounds, wanna see if we can find it?”
“Sure.” And so we started around the back to see if we could locate said pond. It was a warm day for autumn, the leaves had not yet changed colors, the sun beamed down on us, and a slight breeze rustled through the trees. The shadow of the building was cold to pass through, and for that reason I was glad I was wearing long sleeves. “Oh my god, no!” I suddenly gasped aloud, realizing something so horrifying that I fell to my knees in absolute terror. Agony shot through me at the very thought. “No, no, no!”
“What is it?” Ashley questioned, alarmed, bending down next to me. “Are you ok?”
“No,” I moaned. “This-this is the last time until summer that I will be able to wear all black. I am most certainly not ok.” There was a slight pause.
“Well, that’s… Unfortunate,” he settled on. I glanced up from the ground for a moment, and in that moment, I took a good look at him. Shaggy brown hair stopping as it covered his ears, bangs nearly sweeping over one almond brown eye, wow this boy was attractive, and- hey, did he wear makeup, too?! It looked like a bit of foundation and maybe a tad of eyeliner.
“Do you wear makeup?” The question was out before I could stop it.
“Not like you don’t.” I stood up.
“It’s nothing to be ashamed of, just means that we’re proud enough to defy gender roles. We should be careful with where we put it, though, the priests might be suspicious if they found makeup in the boy’s dormitory.”
“Yeah. Hey, there’s the pond!” Ashley pointed, and there it was. We were around the very back of the school, caught in the largest portion of it’s shadow, so the entire area was shady. Trees loomed around the water, old, grey cobblestone paths circling around it. There was a little stone statue of an angel, which also doubled as the fountain feeding the pond, with a dark tube in the water to filter it back to the top again. Clearly, however, it had not been properly taken care of in years. Another realization suddenly came to me.
“Hey, Ashley, you were going to tell me why you got sent here, but then Ronnie interrupted. What was the reason?” Ashley froze.
“Uh, um, I, uh-you sure you wanna know?”
“If you don’t mind, that’s all.”
“Caught smoking weed,” he lied fast. “Like Ronnie.” Haha. Ashley? I’d only known him half a day, but there was no way that was actually true.
“Dude, you don’t need to lie. It’s fine if you don’t want to tell me. There’s no way you did drugs,” I laughed.
“How do you know?”
“You’re too- I don’t know, I can see it with Ronnie, but not you.”
“Fine. I lied. Maybe I’ll tell you later. Maybe,” he admitted.
“Excuse me, what are you boys doing out here?” A voice called to us, and Ashley and I turned around quickly to see a priest-not Father Smith, thankfully-standing there with a cross expression. He had sharply curved eyebrows, an oval shaped face, black hair parted down the middle that reached his shoulders, and, unlike Father Smith, wore a black and white suit.
“Oh, sorry,” Ashley apologized quickly. “Father…”
“Cerulli,” the priest finished for him. “It’s alright if you’re new here. Father Smith just doesn’t want anyone out here until we fix it up. Is that understandable?”
“Yes,” I replied, and we approached him. He seemed startled by my appearance.
“Might I just add that today will be the last time you wear something like that here, young man,” he directed at me, staring at my getup of a leather jacket, ripped dark jeans, a black shirt, and combat boots. I sighed as he lead us inside.
“I know.”
“What are your names?”
“Ashley Purdy,” Ashley told him.
“Andrew Biersack,” I said.
“Ok,” Father Cerulli nodded. “Have you both checked in?”
“Yeah. I have, at least,” I said. “I don’t know about Ashley, though.”
“Well, I didn’t get to fill out the allergy form and I’m allergic to-” Ashley started, but he was interrupted by someone yelling.
“Father Cerulli! Have you seen Kristen’s new IPhone? It’s really cool!”
“Kids and their electronics,” Father Cerulli muttered, swearing under his breath and quickening his pace to confiscate Kristen’s phone.
“Peanuts,” Ashley finished quietly.
“You should go tell him and fill out the allergy form, that’s pretty important,” I advised. “How badly are you allergic to them?”
“Really badly, actually,” Ashley started. “My throat swells up and I get dizzy and sweat a lot. I need an epipen within the hour. I’m positive my parents told them, already though, I mean, they couldn’t have left that up to me.” I was worried, he could be in trouble if no one knew.
“Can’t hurt to double check,” I pointed out. Ashley shrugged.
“There’s no way my parents forgot to tell them. They did all the paperwork, too, so it must have been in there somewhere,” he replied certainly.
“Ok then,” I said cautiously, still concerned. What if no one knew? We walked inside silently without another word.

That night, at dinner, even before grace was recited, the priests and nuns all introduced themselves. Father Smith stood first.
“I am Father Smith, headmaster and principal of this school.” He sat down again, and a short, brown haired man with glasses rose.
“Father Stump, office secretary.” Ah, that was where I recognized him from. Next was a man with dyed bright red hair, which I found awesome.
“Father Way, gym and health teacher. Just call me Frank.” He struck a sassy pose, prompting a few giggles, before Father Smith shook his head in disapproval and Father Cerulli stood.
“Father Cerulli, history teacher.” A woman with long black hair and pale eyes stood next.
“Sister Hartzler, english teacher.” Another woman, this one with curly chestnut hair and almond eyes, rose.
“Sister Sturm, science teacher.” A strange man with long sleeves, gloves, and a turtleneck stood next. Huh. I wondered why he was wearing all that.
“Father Sykes, art teacher.” He had a thick European accent, it was almost too difficult to understand him properly. Two men stood next, one with brown hair and the other with black hair with a blond streak.
“Father Gaskarth,” The brown-haired one started.
“And Father Barakat,” the other finished.
“Music class,” they said together. Next, a tan guy with shoulder-length brown hair stood.
“Father Fuentes, Spanish teacher.” I was shocked to see a woman with long hair, half dyed red and half dyed black rise next. I didn’t know priests could wear that. Hm, maybe they wouldn’t mind my makeup after all.
“Sister Costello, drama teacher.”
“Yeah, and drama queen,” Father Way added on the side, and laughter bubbled up in tiny bits around the room. Sister Costello rolled her eyes, but underneath her dark sleeves, I saw her flash him the finger, causing both me and Father Way to chuckle as well. Seemed like this school might not be as bad as I thought. When people settled down a couple moments later, the next teacher stood.
“Father Gontier, math teacher,” a man with brown, spiky hair introduced himself. God, how much longer would this go on for?! I began to zone out as they droned on for the next few people. Sister May was the nurse, Father Stars was the cafeteria dude, and a weird guy in a skeleton mask with fuzzy hair was the janitor. By the time we got to eat, our food had gone cold.

Notes

I'm sure you all noticed this, but all the priests are named after band members! What will happen when everyone finds out what Father Sykes (Oli) has to cover up? How will Father Way (Gerard) teach sex education?! Things will get a lot more interesting, and Andy and Ashley will soon be falling harder for each other as time goes on!
