My Saving Grace

It seems as if everything has stopped. I mean Zeke has always had a look to him that attracted me towards him. Natural black hair with big brown eyes. But we’ve never been more than friends or I didn’t think so. We’ve just been real good friends since 9th grade. I do remember one time though, I fell and when he went to help me up, we almost kissed but Callie came. Zeke just stands there biting his lip with a pained expression.

“Zeke, I-I umm…….” Hurt flows over his face.“It’s ok, I get it, it’s fine……I shouldn’t have said anything.” He says looking away.
“Zeke it’s not that, just why didn’t you tell me before?” He doesn’t have to think about his answer.
“Because, I didn’t know what to say, and I didn’t want to tell you………then you not say it back.” I think about Andy. What would he think? Do I love Zeke? I’ve never thought of it that way, we’ve always been friends, or so I thought.

“How long have you felt this way?” I ask softly.
“Halfway through 9th grade,” I think of all the times he would help me when I was pushed down or when I dropped my stuff. It wasn’t just because he’s my friend, but because he loves me. I’ve known Zeke for 2 years, and Andy only half a day, and I’m wondering what Andy would think.

“Zeke…that is very sweet and all…” Zeke steps closer, and I lose my train of thought. I try to find my words again, but Zeke kisses me. His kiss is soft and sweet. Gentle. I try to pull back, but Zeke doesn’t let me. He locks his hand in mine. Then I see a tall figure out of the corner of my eye………Andy…… I quickly rip away from Zeke and turn to Andy. He’s glaring at Zeke his eyes are filled with anger.
“Andy, I told you not to come…..” I say glancing back at Zeke.
“Is this why?” Andy snaps.
“No, I-I-I didn’t intend on that happening.” I say rubbing my palms on my skirt. Zeke looks from me to Andy.

“Jessica who is this?” Zeke asks not taking his eyes off of Andy. Andy takes a few steps closer and stops five inches away from Zeke and I. He stares Zeke dead in his eyes.
“She’s mine” He growls. What does he mean, I’m his? I notice that Zeke balls his fists up, he’s never been the type to fight, and especially not with Andy.
“I met him yesterday…….”I say in a shaky voice, trying to distract them.

“Come on, Jessica.” Andy says in a deep voice, the words rolling off of his tongue. “Why don’t you just leave her alone? She doesn’t want you……” Zeke says standing in front of me.

“I’m not going to waste my time on you,” Andy says reaching around Zeke and grabbing my arm. He pulls me, but Zeke slams his fist into Andy’s jaw. Andy instantly lets me go and throws a punch, hitting Zeke in the nose. Zeke stumbles back but manages to keep his balance.

“Stop!” I yell, but they don’t Zeke uppercuts Andy, but Andy comes back hitting him in the eye. They throw punches back and forth, making each other bleed and groan. Somehow I’m able to get myself in-between their bodies.

“Stop!” I yell, again trying to hold them back, but as Andy is trying to hit Zeke, he ends up punching me hard in the jaw, and I fall to the ground. The impact of Andy’s bony knuckles to my jaw hurt tremendously. They both stop and kneel down beside me. I can feel my jaw swelling and there is a slight ringing in my ears.

“Jessica, I’m so sorry, I did not mean to hit you.” Andy says in a low deep voice
“No…” I say standing up and pushing him away. “It will just be another bruise to cover my face.” Andy sighs.
“Jessica, I didn’t mean to hit you, I’m sorry.”

“No? Well, it could have been prevented.” I snap. “I asked twice for y’all to stop…. But what did y’all do? Y’all kept going. Y’all were fighting, and for what?” I turn on my heel and I start to walk away. I’m grabbed by my wrist and sharply turned around. I’m expecting it to be Andy, but its Zeke.

“I was fighting for you.” He says tightening his grip.
“Get off of me.” I say pulling away from his grip. “I didn’t need you to fight for me…..” I turned around and started to run, ignoring their calls for me to come back. I don’t care if their fighting let them tear each other apart. I arrive at my house breathless. I go into the kitchen to find Brandon and Callie, sitting at the counter.

“Where were you? We were waiting for you….” Callie says hugging me.
“What happened to your jaw?” Brandon asks with a raised eyebrow. I go into the freezer and I grab an ice pack.
“Nothing…” I mumble putting the ice pack up to my jaw.
“Was it Natalie?” Callie asks, with a dark tone to it. I sit on the counter and bite my lip.

“Ummm, no it wasn’t.”Callie sighs.
“Then what happened?” Callie asks impatiently.
“Well….. Zeke asked to see me after school…….” Brandon tenses at the mention of Zeke Brandon has never liked me around any type of guy. “We were in the school parking lot and he told me he loved me……well somehow, he ended up kissing me…And then I saw…..Andy.” Brandon’s eyes turn cold.

Andy was there?” He hisses. I glare at him, and he looks away probably remembering what we talked about.
“Well, Andy and Zeke ended up getting into a fight….” Callie gasps.
“No he did not! Zeke never fights!” She exclaims.
“Yeah……well when I got in the middle of it, to try to stop it, Andy accidentally hit me in my jaw…” Brandon balls his fists up.

“See, I told you!” He growls.
“Brandon I told you, it was an accident!” I shout. “And anyways you don’t have to worry I’m done……with both of them.” Just then there is a Knock at the door. But before I can get up to answer it, Brandon races out of the room. I follow him and he swings the door open…….
As soon as I see the face I turn around and start walking away.
