Unsung Heroes

Ch. 43 Trouble on the Beach

Ash and I decided on a simple wedding. The main reason being neither of us felt like spending a ton of money for it and would rather put the money we would have spent toward a house and I mostly wanted the honeymoon part of the wedding to happen. I didn’t need a big party.
Much to Ash’s relief, I might add. He was so happy when I told him I didn’t want to spend so much money that he actually ripped my clothes off of me to show me how happy he was. And it was awesome.
This was a pretty big change of pace for me since in Brasil, it’s very common to have large, extravagant parties for weddings, birthdays, etc. It’s a party country for a reason.
Ash and I knew that that technically meant really trying to budget the wedding as much as possible. I didn’t care how fancy my wedding dress was as long as it wasn’t white. Ash wanted to wear a tux, and we both agreed the biggest part of our budget was going to our honeymoon.
We sent out invitations to Ash’s family and all our friends and coworkers. I made Angel my maid of honor and Maya, Juliet, Inna and Anna my bridesmaids. Ash made the band his groomsmen and made CC his best man. Easy enough, I guess.
We decided to get married at a country club. We were getting married in a ballroom and have a cocktail hour with an open bar for a couple hours while the ballroom was changed for the reception. The theme was going to be modern Gothic. This basically meant everything was going to be chrome, black and white – chrome being Ash’s favorite color.
We decided on a fall wedding since summer is LA is hot as balls. By this time, Nicolas would be almost a year old. He was already sitting up and was starting to scoot on the ground on his stomach to get himself around.
This then meant we had to start baby proofing the apartment. We covered all the outlets, locked the cabinets with cleaning supplies, the fridge, toilet and front door. This way, we made sure that Nicolas wouldn’t accidentally hurt himself.
I put a playpen in the front room that we used both for him to be in when we couldn’t keep a constant eye on him and for him to take his naps. Our front room was looking more and more like a playroom with the number of toys and diapers we kept there. He didn’t like it much, at first. We essentially forced him to become used to the playpen so that we could relax a little.
This was especially true since we had to focus more of our time on planning our wedding. We decided to do something similar to when Andy and Juliet got married, which was not tell anyone until the day after.
When we finally got around to planning and organizing, we hired the same wedding planner that Andy and Juliet used, since their ceremony was beautiful. As much as we didn’t want to have anything too fancy, we also wanted to make sure it went exactly how we wanted it to.
With our theme allowing for some creativity, our centerpieces were going to be vases filled with white and black flowers, skulls and the vases were going to be aged chrome and have chain links hanging off of them. The table clothes were black and white. Since that’s where most of the decorating was going, dried vines and decorative skulls and decorative black veil and lace was covering most surfaces. Dried flowers were on every table.
At the altar, we were having an iron frame made and were going to string lights and black gauzy fabric strung through it with ivy and black and white flowers with more skulls.
Instead of a crappy DJ, we went for speakers with a set playlist on it. I had no idea what the song Ash picked for our first dance was, but since there was no father-daughter dance, he was going to dance with his grandmother in place of his mother. I knew there was going to be a dance that was for me and Nicolas which meant I was holding him to my chest and swaying back and forth on the dance floor.
The menu was going to be Brazilian. It was one of the main things I had control over, so it was going to be catered Brazilian barbecue. Not quite like a churrascaria, where they would bring the meat to you on a skewer, but it had the buffet element and the caterers would give you the cuts of meat you wanted. I made sure it was only what Brazilians actually eat when they go, and not what they give tourists.
The cake was something else. Really, it was in a league of its own. It was Burton-esque styled, looking like steampunk, with black fondant styled to look like a top hat with a feather plum, studded belt buckles, a Victorian skirt, jewel details and flowers painted a dark red that was blended with black. It might have looked like a little much, but when we saw it, we laughed so hard at how epically gothic it was that we had to get it.
It was probably more expensive than my dress. This dress was designed by Ash, with help from some of his friends who specialize in dresses. It ended up being so amazing that I nearly cried when I tried it on. It was sleeveless, with an ornate lace detail along the top of the bodice, collar and down the back, forming a keyhole design on the lower back. The skirt was a mermaid skirt, but a very simplistic one, with no detail along it, keeping the shape sleek and form-fitting. It was comfortable and beautiful. Plus, it featured my tattoos so extensively and they matched so well that it was perfect.
My hair had been growing out since Nicolas was born, since I had no time to get it done. For the wedding, I was having it dyed black, and pulled back into a messy bun. My makeup was going to be much heavier around my eyes, but I wanted my lips painted a sinful color of red to stand out from my dress.
Ash decided on a tuxedo that was all black, his hair pulled back to the nape of his neck and have elements of his stage clothes present. This meant his boots, studded belt and chains and lots of eyeliner.
To some, our wedding may same ridiculous, but it was ours. We loved the gaudiness and the insanity of it. We saved money by not hiring a DJ, Ash making my dress, hiring the caterer we did since they didn’t charge an insane amount, and having it at the location we were.
It was a formal, black tie event. We told our friends to come in their most formal, gothic clothing they had. Thankfully for our crowd, that wasn’t very hard to achieve.
For Nicolas, Ash designed a little gothic Lolita boy outfit for him. Essentially is was a black button up shirt, a slightly shimmery black vest, dress pants and little dress shoes. His hair was going to be styled out of his face since he hadn’t had his first haircut, yet.
For my bridesmaids, I had them wear short, black, lace dresses with a layered skirt and carry bouquets of red roses tinted black. They could style their hair how they wanted.
Ash’s grooms were told to wear something similar to him, where they incorporated their stage clothing into their tuxedos.
To officiate the wedding, I refused to get a priest or anyone of religious affiliation to do the ceremony. I was done with the church, and Ash respected me to do it. We hired a friend who was ordained to do it.
By the time our wedding date rolled around, we were so exhausted from preparing for it. We had exhausted ourselves to make it happen.
As far as bachelor or bachelorette parties were concerned, Ash wanted to have his with his friends at a strip club. As tacky as that was, I told him that if he went to a strip club, I would go to a male review show. Calling our own bluffs, Ash decided on a weekend trip to Vegas with his closest friends, and I went to Hawaii with mine.
Gran stayed in LA to watch Nicolas for us, so we could go. I brought my bridesmaids with me to Hawaii.
Sitting in the airport, I read a book at the gate, waiting to board. Inna and Juliet were sitting next to me, talking about their own weddings. Maya, Angel and Anna were chatting away and sharing something on their phones.
“So, bride,” Juliet said suddenly, turning to me. “Share details, please.” She called the attention of the others to me. “What are we doing; what’s the schedule; what can you tell us?”
I smiled and set my book down.
“We are staying in a resort on the beach in Maui. We have a section of beach to ourselves to enjoy, and later, we are going to a real, traditional Luau. We have guided tours up the volcano, and we have a wine-tasting. Tomorrow night, we’re renting an evening on a party yacht with full service.”
Their mouths gaped.
“Jesus, guessing that’s not the simple part of your wedding, is it?” Angel laughed.
I snorted. “We’re spending most of our budget on our honeymoon. Honestly, we have so much help paying for our weekends that it doesn’t honestly make that much of a dent. Ash is renting executive suites in the Bellagio and is going to be spending a lot of time at expensive dinners and probably at least one strip joint.”
They got quiet when I mentioned the strip clubs.
“It doesn’t bother you that they are going to go to strip clubs?” Juliet asked me.
I shrugged. “No, not really. We’re gonna check in with each other with a facetime at night to make sure we are okay. And he told me it wasn’t definite. Besides, he’s with your husbands and boyfriends. They’ll keep him in line. I also trust my fiancé and I’m not expecting him to do anything stupid.”
The flight was long, but we had first class and were able to relax in the large seats. I took the time to take a much-needed nap. I’d spent so long feeding and changing my son and keeping such a constant eye on him that I hadn’t had any time for me. Ash and I considered ourselves lucky if we were able to get to sit down and watch a movie together, or even sleep in the same bed together for more than a few hours.
By the time we landed in Maui, we were ready to be done with airplanes and wanted to head to the hotel. I was already missing Nicolas. It was the first time I’d been away from him, and it was getting to me. Gran promised me she would send me pictures of videos all day and then facetime him at night.
The girls all wanted to spend our first day on the beach. We checked into the hotel, changed into our bathing suits and headed to the beach. It was hot and balmy, but there was a nice wind passing through.
It was nothing in comparison to summers in Brasil, but still.
I was finally getting comfortable in my body again. Ash had insisted on picking out my bathing suit for the trip for me. He chose a microkini. I wasn’t surprised in the slightest. The bathing suit was solid black. I wore it with a lacy cover up.
My hair had been growing out, so I got it done. It was shaped now to have bangs, dyed black, and was going to be long enough to be tied into a bun. Ash was obsessed with it, so I decided to hang onto it for a while. Short hair was more practical now that Nicolas was becoming more and more grabby. Even Ashley was thinking about cutting his hair because when Nicolas grabs on with his sticky, chubby little fists, it hurt to remove them.
After we arrived at the beach, Inna and Anna ran off to swim in the water, laughing and splashing. Maya and Angel ran off to find a place to rent paddle boards. I wanted a moment’s peace, and so did Juliet. We stayed with the towels and bags and relaxed on hotel chairs, sunbathing.
“Dude,” Juliet said next to me. She was in a black and white striped bandeau bikini and large, round sunglasses. Her light brown hair was in a high messy bun on her head.
“What?” I was relaxed into the chair and only half-listening.
“You’re getting married.”
I chuckled. “Yeah, I know.”
“How in the hell did that happen? You achieved the impossible and got Ash to agree to get married and have babies. I am impressed.”
“He brought it up first, actually.”
I heard the chair jostle around as Juliet moved to turn to me. “Get outta here. He actually mentioned settling down to you?”
I turned my head and peered at her through one half-lidded eye.
“Yeah, when the band was at Warped Tour. We were getting ready in the bus bathroom one morning, and out of nowhere, he started asking me about kids. Nearly poked my eye out with a mascara brush.”
Juliet laughed in disbelief. “You’re kidding.”
“No, I’m not. It totally took me by surprise. I never thought marriage, let alone kids, would be in the cards for him. I think he started thinking about kids because of some legacy he wants to pass on. He’s older than me by nearly ten years. I’m twenty-seven, and he’s thirty-four. I think he just started to realize he’s not that young, anymore, and he finally started thinking about settling down. He adores Nicolas; I think he’s more important to Ash than I am. Hell, I feel the same way. Sometimes when I come home from dance or the gym, I’ll catch the two of them together. Ash would have him on his lap and would be playing with him or just watching TV with him. I’ve watched than man change more diapers and give more baths than my grandmother or any of my aunts with my plethora of cousins.”
Juliet sat quietly and listened as I spoke.
“That’s probably the cutest fucking thing I’ve ever heard,” Juliet said finally. “The thought of Ash changing diapers alone is enough to make me laugh.”
I snorted. “At first, neither of us could stomach it. I love my baby, but oh my god, the smells that come out of him.” I wrinkled my nose in disgust. “We gagged so much we both nearly threw up all over Nicolas. After a while, it got easier. The more regulated his diet got, the less it smelled. Until we started giving him solid foods.”
Juliet gagged. “I want a baby but hearing stuff like that makes it hard to keep wanting one.”
I smiled. “I love my son more than anything in the world, Jules. And I know Ash feels the same way. He’s looking more and more like Ash every day.”
“Do you guys want more kids?”
I pursued my lips. “I don’t know. Delivery was hard, but pregnancy wasn’t too bad for me. I don’t know if Ash would want to have any more kids. At least, not yet. Our apartment had no room for any more kids. I think Ash would want an actual house before we have any more. That way they have a place to play and run around in.”
At that moment, Anna and Inna ran over to us, giggling and dripping wet.
“Guys,” Anna said out of breath. “The water is amazing! You guys wanna go in? Inna and I want to catch our breathes.”
Inna nodded and giggled. “Yes,” she said. “Water is wonderful, but I need to rest, now.”
I stood up and stretched my arms above my head.
“Damn girl!”
I jumped in my skin and turned to see a group of surfers lounging not too far away, leaning on their longboards. They were closer to Anna’s age than mine, and they were staring at us like we were meat.”
I turned back around to ignore them.
“Hey you! You with the ass!”
I bit my lip and concentrated on Juliet. She was making steady eye contact with me while applying sunscreen.
“Yo, I’m talking to you!”
Oh my god, I hate men sometimes.
Continuing to ignore them, I started marching down the beach to the water, Juliet following close behind me.
“Ignore them, Indy,” she hissed at me. “They’re pigs with no common sense.”
I took a deep breath and nodded, grinning at Juliet. Taking her hand, we raced to the water and leapt in.
It felt cool, but not cold. I dove under and when I came up, I brushed my hair behind my head. Juliet popped up next to me and did the same.
“Oh my god, that felt good.”
I swam out a little and floated by Juliet, who was leaning her head back and enjoying the sun on her skin.
“Hey guys!”
I jumped and looked up to see Angel and Maya paddling to us on boards. When we were younger, we would often go to the beach or vacation to places like Puerto Vallarta and Baha Mexico. Every time, Angel and Maya would track down a place to rent paddle boards. I swear, those two are obsessed with them.
“Having fun, ladies?” Juliet called out.
“The best!” Maya cheered from where she stood. “The water is perfect for paddle boarding.”
“We have to keep moving or else we’ll tip,” Angel said from her perch. “But we’ll catch up with you guys when our rental time’s up.”
They moved beyond us to keep paddling and enjoying themselves.
I turned back to Juliet and started to swim with her.
Out of nowhere, a hand slipped between my thighs and started to creep up, making my skin crawl. I kicked forcefully and moved back into Juliet.
“Juliet, someone just groped me!” I clung to her arm. She grabbed me in turn.
“Me too!” She said. We looked around wildly, and out of nowhere, the heads of two of the surfers who were pestering us appeared from under the water, grinning like jokers.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?!” I shouted. “Get away from us!” We started to swim backward.
One of them chuckled. “Oh, come on, we were just playing. Have some fun with us,” he practically purred in a voice so oily it nearly separated the water.
“Take the hint, asshole,” Juliet hissed. “We’re not interested. We’re married.”
We continued to swim backwards, not taking our eyes off of them. Suddenly, we hit flesh walls and were grabbed from behind. Juliet squeaked, and I gave a shout as we both struggled to get away. The hands around my middle suddenly reached up to grope my chest, hard. Like really, really hard. It fucking hurt!
“Let go of me you fucking psycho!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. I shot my heel up behind me as hard as I could and got him square in the groin. He made a noise and let go of me. I turned to Juliet. Thankfully, where we were, we were touching sand, because I reared my hand back and hit the guy touching her right in the eye. He howled and let go of Juliet to clutch his eye.
I grabbed Juliet and we swan as hard as we could away from the perverts. When there was enough water to wade but not struggle through, we ran. The girls by our stuff didn’t seem to notice what was going on.
“Girls!” I shouted, making them all jump. “We’re leaving, now!”
They looked confused.
“Indy and I were attacked in the water by those pervert surfers!” She pointed back down the beach behind us.
“What?!” Angel shouted, angrily jumping up.
Inna started shouting aggressively in Russian, and Maya and Anna both just looked sort of scared.
I grabbed my towel and reached for my bag.
“I don’t give a shit, right now. I just want to go back to the hotel.”
“Hey!”
I looked over my shoulder to see the four men coming out of the water in our direction.
“Oh god, they’re trying to come over here.”
“Indy, you’re a trained martial artist.” Maya looked at me warily as she spoke.
I glared at her. “Yes, but not underwater!”
“Bitch, we’re talking to you!”
I felt my blood boil in my veins, and I only saw red. I whipped around, feeling the muscles in my shoulders and biceps flex under my skin. My jaw clenched so hard that my teeth hurt.
I lunged.
All I remember is the sound of the four men screaming at me to stop. When I finally came out of my fog, I looked around. The men were on the sand, either unconscious or barely. My knuckles were covered in their blood.
Apparently, I’d lost my mind.
“Indy, oh my god!” I jumped and looked behind me at my friends, huddled together. “That was amazing!”
At this point, a few people had gathered near and were staring at us.
I raised my hands. “Hi,” I called. “It’s all fine, now. These men attacked me and my friend in the water and then charged us, so I defended us. This was self-defense!”
I backed away, toward my friends.
“Guys,” I hissed. “Someone call the police before someone else does and I get arrested.”
“Too late,” Anna whimpered.
I turned to see a sheriff walked toward me, his gun holster open.

Hey everyone!

Couple things:
#1 I know the wedding theme and all of the decorations seem gaudy and ridiculous, and that's exactly why it is the way it is. Neither of them like traditional weddings, so they went balls to the wall with an over the top, untraditional wedding.
#2 Some have told me that the way the story reads is a little like a giant paragraph. I do separate the paragraphs when I write the story. I don't know if on other computers it doesn't do that, but it separates for me. tHIS SITE IS REALLY weird when I try to type the story directly into the story space.

I will try to write more now that I am on holiday break until the next term.

I write it out on Microsoft word and then copy and paste. Usually if I type it out directly it lags and refuses to let me edit it. When I write it out and copy and past, it shows paragraph breaks. Maybe it reads differently on other computers or something, but I have always been able to distinguish the paragraphs with my computer.

I don't know how it would work on a phone, but I figured out on my computer that I have to click the Enter key twice at the end of a paragraph to get it to space, because just indenting doesn't work on here.

@BlackIris
Im reading on my phone and there are no spaces between each of the paragraphs. It might justf be my phone

@BlackVeilFireGirl99
Thanks. I don't know what medium you're using to read my story, but on my computer it shows separate paragraphs. I don't indent as it takes forever to do and doesn't always read. This site doesn't always like to allow me to edit and upload the way I would in any other scenario.

This is a good story but you need to put spaces between the paragraphs otherwise its really hard to read as its just a giant block of text other then that I love the story. Its certainly and interesting read.
