Unsung Heroes

Ch. 40 New Momma

My eyes slowly became unglued as I woke from a sudden and deep slumber. I wasn’t weighed down by the weight of my stomach anymore. It remained extended, but not nearly as far as it was before, but it felt strangely empty, and I was very aware of it.
The room was fairly quiet. After my son was cleaned, weighed, and measured, he was taken to be examined to be on the safe side, and was going to be monitored for twenty-four hours.
I could feel his absence heavily in the room. I couldn’t feel him within me, anymore, and it felt like my heart was missing.
A sudden snort made me jump and turn to see Ash slumped over in a chair, his head resting at an awkward angle on the backrest, and his arms crossed across his chest. He was resting peacefully, but I could still see the remains of bags under his eyes. It was a very long night for us. In total, I was in the hospital for a couple of days, now. My labor was stalled for about nine hours, and I was in labor for four hours. I was absolutely exhausted still, and my baby wasn’t around me. I was having such difficulty sleeping because he wasn’t in the room with me that the nurses sedated me to force me to rest.
Suddenly, there was a gentle, unassuming knock on the door, and the face of a friendly-looking nurse peered in, and smiled brightly when she saw I was awake.
“Good afternoon, Miss!” She pushed the door further open and led in an incubator on wheels holding my son into the room. “Someone really wanted to see Mommy, today.”
Ash, at that moment, awoke and turned to see the nurse with our son. Standing to move next to the bed, he watched the nurse as she moved to my left with the incubator.
“The good news is that he’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with his lungs, and since those take the longest to develop, everything else is fine, as well. He’s a little on the small side, but he’s healthy.”
I saw Ash take his phone out of his pocket and start to film, focusing mostly on his baby boy.
The nurse undid a couple of latches, startling my baby a bit, and opened the top. He had a heart monitor on his chest, which she gently pulled from him, and re-swaddled him in the baby blue blanket around him. Then, gently, with her hand cupping the underside of his head and her other supporting his little bottom, she lifted him from the incubator.
“Here we go, Momma,” she said brightly, turning to me and moving to gently lay him in my arms.
I sat up to the best of my ability and stretched out my arms to accept and cradle my baby boy. This was the first time I really saw him, and saw him clean. He snuffled and started to protest to the movement, but immediately relaxed once he made contact with me. He blearily opened his eyes and turned up at me, but I knew he couldn’t really see me, yet.
He had tons of dark brown, nearly black hair. His skin was as dark as Ash’s, and his nose was long, narrow, and flat like Ash’s was. His little chin, surrounded by a good amount of baby fat, was obviously mine, though. His little arm came loose from the swaddle, and he was curling it against my chest.
I felt my face grow hot and my cheeks became wet with my tears.
Hello, sweetheart,” I whispered in Portuguese. “I’m sorry you had to be away from me for so long. But you’re here now, and I’m so happy that you are. I love you so much, my darling. It’s hard to believe that I could love you as much as I do. But it’s true. You’re perfect,” I brought him close to my face and cuddled him gently, feeling his soft, smooth skin and smelling him. He smelt sweet, and clean, like how all newborns smell, but I could detect unique things in his scent that made him mine, and no one else’s. His little arm came up from his chest and collided with my face, and I felt his little hand reach into my hair.
I felt Ash rest on the bed next to me, and his arm curled around me.
“Well, it looks like I have a competitor,” he said jokingly.
I smiled. “He has my heart, Ash, I’m sorry.”
I smiled up at him, and was a bit surprised to see that his eyes were glazed over a bit with unshed tears, and he was staring deeply at our son.
I smiled and held him to him.
“Ash, hold your son.”
He looked a bit surprised, but gladly and carefully took him from my arms, and held him close to his chest.
“Hey there, kiddo,” he said quietly. “Never thought I’d be here in my lifetime. I never thought I’d have any kids, being the person I was. But your momma is something special, isn’t she? You should know, you’ve spent the majority of your life inside her,” he said jokingly. “I can’t wait to be your dad. I’m going to show you how to do so many things. I love you,” he moved off of the bed and sat in the chair next to the bed, holding his son and rocking him against his chest.
“Well thanks, babe,” I said with a quiet laugh. “I’m glad I mean that much to you.”
He chuckled and turned the baby around so he was resting in his other arm. “Of course you do, babe.”
“Is anyone still here?” My gaze flickered toward the door.
He nodded. “Yeah, everyone is. They wanna meet the baby, and have been waiting for him to leave observation. Most of them went home while you were asleep and took showers and changed clothes, but came back. Crew guys have come here, too. And my grandma moved her plane trip up sooner and my grandpa bought a ticket. They’ll be here tomorrow. Maya and Angel are here, too.”
I smiled. “Well then, maybe we should name him before they all give their input.”
He laughed, but stopped short when the baby started to fight his swaddle, and started to mewl. Almost instantly, I knew he was hungry and needed to be fed.
My chest was heavy and swollen with milk. I could feel my chest start to leak – fantastic – and held my arms out for him.
“Give him here, he’s hungry and I’m leaking his food, right now.”
As Ash passed him off to me, I reached behind me to undo the string holding up the hospital gown I was wearing, and slid my arms free so that I was topless. I brought him to my chest, and let him search for my nipple. His mewling sounded impatient as his mouth felt around my skin before he found my nipple, and immediately latched on and started to nurse, sucking hard.
“Well, that’s a sensation I wouldn’t have imagined.”
“Damn, he’s staked his claim, hasn’t he?” Ash pouted his lips.
“Ha!” I laughed. “I’ll be leaking all the time, anyway, so it’s not like they’ll be much fun, for a while.”
We watched the baby as he nursed me, his little hands resting on each side of my breast. He was happily nursing away; his little eyes were closed. Suddenly, they opened, and he gazed up at me, locking eyes with me. He couldn’t see a whole lot, yet, so it gave me goosebumps to see his little, dark blue eyes staring up at me.
“I know what I want to name him,” I murmured. “Nicolas.”
“Really?”
“You don’t like it?”
“No, no, I do. I like it a lot, actually. But what made you think of it.”
I smiled. “Well, it’s a Brazilian name, but it’s not anything complicated or will get him teased growing up. You can choose his middle name.”
Ash was watching him nurse with a concentrated look on his face.
“Well, what was your dad’s name?”
I wrinkled my nose. “I don’t wanna name him after my dad, babe. I’ll just be reminded of him every time I look at him.”
I switched sides so he could suckle my other boob.
“Well then, what do you think we should name him?” Ash was still watching him.
I shook my head. “I already told you, you’re giving him his middle name. I chose his first, you choose his middle name.”
Ash continued to study him. “I like the name David.”
I looked down at my son, studying his small, tanned face and dark hair as his face stayed against my chest.
“Nicolas David?” I watched him. I tried saying it in Portuguese, which, doesn’t really change the pronunciation of Nicolas, but sharply changed David, not really pronouncing the last “D”. I decided that David was a good middle name, and smiled at Ash.
“I like it.” I reached for Ash’s hand, which he grasped firmly. “Nicolas David Purdy.”

After Nicolas was done nursing and had been burped and changed, I pulled the hospital gown back up and around my neck before I dressed Nicolas in a white onesie Ash bought from the hospital gift shop, and rewrapped him in the blanket, securing his blue hat on his head, and then I reclined against the raised mattress, rocking him against my chest.
Ash was on the phone with Gran, talking to her about her flight preparations, and where they were going to get a taxi and come to the hospital.
A sudden knock on the door took both of our attentions, and it opened slightly, CC’s face popping in, smiling widely.
“Everyone decent?” He said opening the door wider.
Ash smiled and murmured a good bye into the phone before pocketing it. He held the door open so that the guys, Juliet, Inna, Maya, Angel, and Yanni and Blasko came in.
Maya and Angel immediately were at my side, peering over my shoulder to look into Nicolas’s face.
“Oh my god,” Maya cooed. “He’s so beautiful!”
I smiled, and noticed that everyone else loosely gathered around the bed, smiling, and looking fairly tired, like they haven’t been sleeping since we got here.
Ash came to my side to carefully extract Nicolas from my arms and hold him up and in front of him so that most of his tiny body rested against Ash’s heavily painted arm, and his little head was resting in his large hand, so that more people could gather around him and look at Nicolas.
“Everyone, this is my son, Nicolas David Purdy,” Ash announced proudly, gently bouncing Nicolas as he started to squirm and make soft snuffling noises to himself. His chubby little arms came loose and waved around wildly, grasping at the air.
Everyone laughed slightly but all started to coo and aww at Nicolas. He was passed around to hold to just about everyone. Juliet insisted to be first to hold him, smiling widely into his face and cooing gently, kissing his cheeks. From her he went to Andy, then to Maya, Jinxx, Angel, CC, Jake, Inna, and then Yanni. After Yanni, he was brought back over to me.
“How are you feeling, Indy?” CC asked me, suddenly.
I chuckled. “Oh, exhausted, emotionally drained, you know, the usual.” I yawned and handed Nicolas to Ash to place him in the hospital bassinet.
“They held off on my labor for so long, and it felt even longer to dilate and then go to the delivery room.”
Ash cringed. “Yeah, this definitely was not easy for her. We were in the delivery room for so long before Nicolas decided to make an appearance. There were more than enough complications to last a lifetime.”
I saw the girls cringe visibly.
“Girls, don’t listen to what those new age moms say about not taking the epidural. Seriously, it’s not worth it.” I groaned, stretching my arms above my head.
There was a small amount of laughter while I settled against the bed.
“Alright guys, well, Nicolas and Indy really need to get some sleep,” Ash said quietly, and pressed a button on the side of the bed to lower me down into a better resting position.
I pulled the thin blanket up further around me as I felt exhaustion creep up, and I yawned widely. I was starting to close my eyes by the time people were done saying their good byes, and before I knew it, sleep overtook me.

A tiny, shrill cry arose me from my sleep, and I saw Nicolas laying in the hospital bassinet next to me, but as I reached for him, a sudden pain started in my crotch and shot through me, making me yelp involuntarily and fall backwards.
“Indy?!”
Ash was suddenly in my face, reaching to pick up Nicolas in the meantime and rock him.
I winced and reclined against the bed, reaching for Nicolas to give him another feeding, reaching behind my head to pull at the strings holding the gown closed so I could expose my breasts and feed him.
“It’s nothing, I think I just felt my tear for the first time,” I winced, feeling Nicolas latch onto my nipple and start to nurse hungrily.
Ash watched me warily. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah, it hurt like a motherfucker but I’m okay, promise.”
Ash flinched when I cussed and looked down and Nicolas. I knew he was already moving into that weird new-parent mode where he was censoring everything he was doing.
“Dude, he can barely comprehend what’s happening other than food, right now. When he’s closer to talking, I’ll watch myself.”
When I felt Nicolas unlatch from my breast, I carefully flipped him around so that he could nurse from my other one.
At that moment, there was a knock on the door, and before I could react, Ash threw the blanket over my to cover my chest right as a nurse walked in briskly, but froze when she saw me.
“Where’s the baby?” She asked slowly, her eyes narrowing.
I rolled my eyes.
“He’s nursing, and my fiancé didn’t want me to flash whoever was coming in,” I said coldly. “Was there something you needed?”
She chuckled. “Actually, I’m the nurse who was supposed to teach you how to breastfeed, but since you seem to have that handled, I’ll be on my way.”
With that, she left the room.
Ash raised an eyebrow at me. “You didn’t have to be rude about it.”
I rolled my eyes and threw the blanket from me, Nicolas was starting to squirm under the heat of the blanket, and when I did he settled back against my chest and kept eating.
“I think this boy is really gonna be into food for a while, if he ever grows out of it,” I said affectionately, stroking his back.
Ash snorted. “He’s a man, Indy; he will never not love food.”
I laughed, and Nicolas dislodged from my nipple. Sensing he was done, I gently rolled him from my chest and held him by his chest leaning forward and allowed his little, chubby legs to rest on my lap – he was unwrapped from his blankets and just in the onesie – and gently, though firmly, tapped the center of his back until I felt air bubble out of his chest and out his mouth.
“Watching you burp him while topless I somehow find really sexy,” Ash said suddenly.
I looked up at him as I lowered Nicolas onto his back across my lap and reached for the top of the gown to rewrap myself in it.
“You’re a weird man, Ashley Purdy,” I remarked, “Only you would find watching me burp your son hot.”
He laughed and got up to lean across the bed and kiss me deeply.
“I love you, Indigo Graham,” he said quietly.
“I love you too, Ash.”
Ash gently slipped his fingers underneath Nicolas and his blanket to scoop him up against his chest, carefully wrapping him in it to keep him warm.
“Indy, you need to sleep. I’ll have some father-son bonding time with my boy, while you catch up on much-needed sleep.”
I whined. “I’m tired of sleeping. I want to be up with you and Nicolas.” I knew he was right, but I wanted to stay up with him as best I could to spend as much time as I could with my baby.
He smiled sympathetically, and pulled his chair closer to me so that I could easily reach out and touch him.
“I know, but you’re clearly still exhausted. Don’t worry, we’ll both still be here when you wake. Nicolas is falling asleep on me, anyway, so it’s not like he’ll be doing much of anything.”
Letting out an exasperated, breathy laugh, I relaxed against the mattress and brought the blanket up further around me.
“Why does it seem you always know what’s best for me, even if I don’t?”
He stroked my faded hair. “Because I love you, and I know you.”
I brought my hand up to cover his. “So it seems.”
“Thank you for giving me my son, Indy, but please, go to sleep.”
I laughed blearily. “Alright, alright.” I looked up at him. “Will you sing to me?”
He raised an eyebrow. I very rarely asked him to sing for me, but when he did, without me asking, I enjoyed it immensely. He had a beautiful, clear, sharp voice that he loved to show off. On the rare occasion I do ask him to sing for me, he normally chooses something like a rock lullaby to sing.
“Any requests?”
I shook my head and turned my body to him slightly. “No, whatever you like is fine with me.”
He smiled and started rocking Nicolas against his chest, and started to sing quietly, almost to himself. He had chosen “Beth” by KISS. One of my favorites, and he knew that.
Beth I hear you calling, but I can’t come home right now… me and the boys are playing, and we just can’t find the sound… just a few more hours, and I’ll be right home to you…”
I joined him quietly. “I think I hear them calling, oh Beth, what can I do?” we sang together until I was too tired to continue, and I drifted into the deepest sleep I’ve had in weeks.

Notes

Aww! Ash and Indy have a new baby! It feels weird to technically birth a new character, but it's nice all the same. I'm sorry it took so long to post, but the semester ends at the end of next week, so I will have a lot more time really soon.

This is what Nicolas David Purdy looks like:

I write it out on Microsoft word and then copy and paste. Usually if I type it out directly it lags and refuses to let me edit it. When I write it out and copy and past, it shows paragraph breaks. Maybe it reads differently on other computers or something, but I have always been able to distinguish the paragraphs with my computer.

I don't know how it would work on a phone, but I figured out on my computer that I have to click the Enter key twice at the end of a paragraph to get it to space, because just indenting doesn't work on here.

@BlackIris
Im reading on my phone and there are no spaces between each of the paragraphs. It might justf be my phone

Thanks. I don't know what medium you're using to read my story, but on my computer it shows separate paragraphs. I don't indent as it takes forever to do and doesn't always read. This site doesn't always like to allow me to edit and upload the way I would in any other scenario.

This is a good story but you need to put spaces between the paragraphs otherwise its really hard to read as its just a giant block of text other then that I love the story. Its certainly and interesting read.
