You Are Not Alone In This

In The Woods

And I guess that was why I dared peek out the door when I heard a knock through the splattering of rain drops. There was a boy standing there, about my age and fair. He had longish black hair and sharp blue eyes. As if in a spell, I unlocked the door, something unheard of for me.
"Hello?" My first word to a stranger, other than Thea, the old women who used to live here.
"Hello, my name is Jinxx. I am a traveler from another land. I was passing through the forest and looking for a town in which I could trade my few belongings, but I'm exhausted. Would you mind if I stayed the night here?" He asked. "I promise I won't be any trouble," he added. I found myself nodding at the strange boy, who sighed in relief at my response.
"Thank you," he said as I stepped aside and he entered. "So what's your name?" He asked me once I had given him a blanket and some tea and ressurected the fire.
"Ama," I responded, not glancing up from tending to it.
"Do you live all alone?"
"Yes."
"Why? You must be lonely here, isolated from the rest of the world." I stiffened, suddenly embarressed at my reasons. I decided to lie.
"I'm not lonely. I just don't mind being on my own," I told him smoothly. He shrugged.
"Whatever floats your boat."
"Huh?"
"Nevermind." And, as he promised, he wasn't any trouble, and left for town the next day. Yet as I carried on with my daily chores, I couldn't get him off my mind. Jinxx. It was an unusual name, but then again, he was an unusual boy. Or maybe I just wasn't used to socializing.
"Ouch!" I cried as I drew my hand away from the bush I was picking fruit from. There was blood dripping from my finger. Apparently, I was lost in my daydreams about him and had pricked it on a thorn. I went to the stream to go clean it off, but as I rinsed the pin sized drop of blood away, for the first time, I began to wonder where it ran to. Did it flow into town? Did it trickle underground? Over the next couple days, I found myself curious about the tiniest, most unimportant things like that. Jinxx and those small questions about the world around me were soon the only things occupying space in my mind. I wanted nothing more than to see him again, and I remembered Thea for a moment "Fear is only in your mind. You musn't let it control you, Ama. You're stronger than that."
"Fine," I grumbled as I slipped on my light, black, cloak. "You win again, Thea." So I stepped out the door. I had never been into town before, but I figured it wouldn't be too difficult to find.

Unfortunately, I was wrong, and was now completely lost. I stumbled blindly through the darkness, tripping over roots and whacking trees without meaning to. I refused to let the fear get to me, though I could feel it growing stronger every second. Moonlight on twigs became bird bones, tree branches began gnarled, wooden fingers reaching for me. Glowing eyes pierced through the darkness, and the final straw was drawn when I thought I heard a snake hiss. I shreiked and ran off as fast as I could, desperately wishing I had never left home. Or could at least find the town. That was when I slammed into a tree.Except it wasn't a tree. It was Jinxx.
"Ama?" He asked, extending a hand to help me stand up. I knew I was crying, I could feel the tears on my face.
"Oh my god, thank goodness you're here!" I cried, hugging him. He hugged me back awkwardly.
"Umm, sure. Hey, are you ok?" I pulled away and wiped the tears away, but I knew it was too late. He had already seen.
"Fine," I lied.
"You can't just say you're fine when you've obviously been crying," he insisted. "You can tell me." I shook my head, and he sighed.
"It's fine if you don't want to, but I could help," he offered. "Is there anything I can do for you, considering you let me stay the night?"
"C-could you p-please make a f-fire?" I stuttered, fighting away more sobs. Of fear, of joy, of who knows what. Sensing I was clearly not ok but not wanting to push it, he nodded and did so.
"Thank you," I sighed when it was burning bright.
"No problem. Are you warm enough?"
"A bit cold," I admitted, and he handed me his only jacket. I shook my head.
"I can't take this from you, then you'll be cold."
"Nah, I've got a blanket."
"If you say so." And we fell asleep with the fire still burning. Thankfully, there were stones around it to prevent a forest fire. In the middle of the night, however, I saw Jinxx shivering in his sleep, but didn't want to wake him up, so I simply laid his jacket over the blanket. I slept until just before the dawn, in which I left him, still asleep, with a 'thank you' scrawled in the dirt with a stick. As I journeyed back, I vowed that I would never leave home again. I couldn't have been more wrong.

Notes

I hope everyone liked this chapter! I made sure that Jinxx was in it bc the first one wasn't BVB related. Fantasy elements coming soon! The title of the chapter is a song called "In The Woods" by Ghost Brigade. If you haven't heard it, I reccomend you look it up, it's awesome.
