VIV’S P.O.V

I wake up with a jolt, like someone had shoved a bolt of lightning down my throat.

I try to open my eyes, but the seemed glued together.

I run my hands down my chest and realise I am not wearing my mini dress and my feet don’t feel as heavy as they would with Doc Martens.

Oh Shit!

Did CC and I actually do it?

Am I in one of his shirts? No I would remember, I tell myself.

Calming down, I begin to feel the item of clothing I am in. Its cotton, it has a plastic sort of feel to it and all I know is that it is REALLY uncomfortable. Why am I in this thing?

Ok girl, backtrack. That always does the trick.

So, I get away from Chris; Check. I jump in the bus; Check. CC and I start talking; Check. He takes my hand and kisses me; Check. And BAM, SMASH, BOOM. Darkness.

Something must have smashed into the back of the bus. Yeah, probably a truck and I must be in hospital because of the accident; that explains the dorky dress…

"CC" I scream, except no sound comes out, I am completely mute.

My eyes snap open and I sit up hurriedly, covering my mouth with my hands.

I can’t speak.

Oh god.

Oh god.

I can’t speak.

"Your voice box was harmed during the accident" a male nurse says from across the room.

Tears spring to my eyes and I shake my head, disbelieving.

"Hey, hey" the nurse coos, crossing the room to pat my back supportively.

"It’s a temporary problem, your Medicare fund pays for it, and no money is required from you whatsoever"

Well that a relief.

"Your friend wasn’t so lucky though" he says, sadly.

I glance over at CC, my eyes wide. I fell some weight on my hand and I look down at the problem.

CC is gripping my hand tightly, just like we were at the time of the accident.

Oh my god.

We have held hands for this long? I am instantly moved and the tears that I was trying to hold came out, breaking the barrier.

"Oh yes, someone by the name of Andy, I think he was of some relation to you? Anyway, he requested that if something happens to one of you, you should… go holding hands, like you were when it happened. We moved the beds closer and had to modify some instruments so this happened" The nurse informs me.

I look up at him, my eyes saying "thank you"

My eyes travel towards CC. A sight of devastation meets me.

Under his hospital dress, I can see that his ribs are distorted, there is also a cut running right across his head. He has a mask over his face and he is hooked up to a machine. Life Support. Tubes are stuck in him and draped all over his body. I look over to the piece of paper taped to the bed. It reads:

Mr Christian Coma – Not supported By Medical Health Fund

Serious Condition – Unstable – Currently using life support

Crushed Vertebrae

Five broken ribs

Punctured (right) lung

Severe blood loss to the head

Several torn ligaments

Operation + Medical Costs = $10,000

As I close my eyes again, I feel the weight of CC’s hand on mine. Only now did the realization hit me that they had moved the beds together so we could be together, to ensure that our last connection isn’t broken.

I grip his hand tighter. I look over at his face. Then I feel slight pressure on my fingers.

"I l-lo-love y-you" he says shakily. Then he lets go of my hand, and his chest collapses.
