Wretchedly Divine (Gasping for Air)

Chapter 13: She Must Be Bulletproof

When Ashley called me about her not being where she was supposed to be I got worried, and paced outside the door of my white room, wondering if I should try and contact her. I paced for a good while before calling Ashley back to ask him if he’d heard anything. His phone was off. Protocol said that a phone couldn’t be off for more than thirty minutes at a time, so I decided to continue my pacing at waist it out.

I called every five minutes for the next hour. Nothing. I wanted to scream with frustration as I threw the phone down and went into my white room. Knowing full well the possible consequences of my actions and not caring. I needed to know where she was, and that she was safe.

I sat down in the center of my white room and found it harder than ever before to go into the trance with my heart going a thousand beats a minute and more worry and stress weighting down on my shoulders than ever before. I breathed deeply and let my thoughts drift to pleasant things. The sound of her laugh when we were younger and I used to talk to her through the connection her smile, which I caught brief glances of while she looked in a mirror. Her ability to look to the bright side of every situation thrown at her, and try and see the good in everything even when there was so little good to see. I continued to breath deeply, but stopped my thoughts, focusing on the shifting line of connection that lay between us. I still hadn’t figured out how to establish these white lines, and I was glad Mom had made sure I had this one before she passed. It was one of three lines that I once had, but now it existed singularly since my parents died. I grabbed onto it and felt the stream of thoughts immediately.

She was having a giant adrenaline rush, so she didn’t even realize that I was there. She just continued talking at the man who appeared to have attacked her, but she didn’t seem like herself.

“I don’t know who you think you fuckin’ are, talkin’ to me like a two year old, but I am not two year old, okay?! I am a grown woman who goes by the name Shelby, and I don’t know where you get Ashley from Shelby. You stoop-ed Mutha fuckas just need to go and take a readin’ class again, okay, because I ain’t no fucking Ashley.” She was kicking him, but he didn’t even seem to notice. I wished she’d look at his face. I wanted to know if it was a Shadow. I was so afraid it was a Shadow. She tried to kick him in the groin, but he pinned it to the ground. She in turn dragged her nails across his face, and I breathed a sigh of relief realizing it wasn’t a Shadow, but who else would be so emotionless in the face of such pain. She’d practically clawed his face off!

“Here we go, holding onto lies.” He shook his head at her, and I growled. Those were my words. My words for her! How did he know them! “Holding onto ties that vanish. Cut the rope and fall into the sky. The Devil is filling your mind with sadness.” He murmured, and she was screaming her lungs out, while blood from his face dripped onto her, and he still refused to her off her. He was dripping blood and completely emotionless. Thankfully she’d remembered the self-defense I taught her.

She pinched her finger around his windpipe and as he lost the ability to breathe as he experienced a muscle spasm. Pride welled through me as she stood and spit on him.
“The World’s a gun, and I’ve been aiming all my life.” She said without the strange accent, and I realized she must have been faking it to try and convince him to leave her. He looked at her angrily, and it would’ve been a perfect time to get a look at his face, accept it was all cut up. That’s a girl. I started to sing along with her as she thought the words to my song in her head.
I’ve got something to live for, I know that I won’t surrender. I’m a warrior of youth. I’m taking over, a shot to the new world order.

“I am bulletproof.” She finished aloud, and I swelled with pride. Until she started to remember me, but theen forced herself to stop. I felt a twinge of anger, and then pain as I realized that thinking of me was causing her physical pain as she remembered me singing to her.
No, don’t think about that, just run. She told herself as she started to run. She moved quickly though the junk line that surrounded The Box and when she broke the line I could tell she wanted to scream in happiness, but resisted the urge out of necessity. She just kept running and remembering our song, making me happier than anything ever could. She still remembered all the words.

“Here I go,
Another prison flight, another perfect sky I damaged
Now I know
Just who created life and why I set my sights to save it
The world's a gun and I've been aiming all my life”

I was singing right along with her, out loud, not caring if she knew I was there, but based on the way she was ignoring it I assumed she was brushing it off, or telling herself it wasn’t real. I wanted to tell her it was real, and that I was there, but I didn’t, and I didn’t know why. I just kept singing with her, conveying affection and embracement through the link that I hadn’t in years, telling her without telling her that she wasn’t alone.

She continued running and chanting my song in her head, and I kept singing with her, not wanting to lose the connection I had with her any time soon, even thought I knew I should tell the people in the city to start fanning out and looking for her farther away.

“Got something to live for, I know that I won't surrender
A warrior of youth
I'm taking over, a shot to the new world order
I Am Bulletproof

And as they take their final breath, I have built the truth
I'm taking over a shot to the new world order
I Am Bulletproof

Got something to live for, I know that I won't surrender
A warrior of youth
I'm taking over, a shot to the new world order
I Am Bulletproof

Got something to live for, I know that I won't surrender
A warrior of youth
I'm taking over, a shot to the new world order
I Am Bulletproof”

I sighed as she came to the end of her memory and pulled back from the link, knowing that the glory I’d just relived would have to wait until I called Ash again and tried to figure out what the fuck was going on.

I left my white room, and picked the phone up off the ground, knowing the indestructible bitch was just fine. I dialed the other satellite phone and groaned when there was no answer.

There was a sudden commotion as I internally cursed and I looked down the hall to see people going from the training room towards the Great Hall. I started to follow their path wondering what all the fuss was about. I rounded the corner towards the Hall when I got bumped into by Amy.

“Prophet.” She said breathlessly, moving away from me. “Abriga’s come back, and she brought someone with her.” She told me and I felt my hopes flare, only to remember that when I was in her mind Ashtin was alone, not with Abriga, so there was no way it was her.

“Who is it?” I asked her, knowing she was a shy girl.

“I don’t know sir, it’s a boy with glasses though.” She told me, hoping this would someone keep me from getting mad at her, even though I wasn’t going to get mad at her. No one besides Darren ever got mad at her. She was such a sweet girl, she’d just been through too much.

“Alright, well where is he. I think he needs a welcome, don’t you think?” I asked her, smiling and slinging my arm over her shoulder and attempting to convey comfort.

She nodded. “He’s in the Great Hall.” She informed me and I started walking that direction, arm still slung around her.

“Then let’s go welcome him, shall we?”

I was distracted as we walked to the Hall, Amy's shoulders slowly relaxing beneath my arm. I knew the touch would make her slightly uncomfortable, and I also knew that she needed to be pushed a little to come out of the shell she'd secluded herself in for so long, so I always made it a point to be friendly with her. Like I said, she'd seen to much. As I continued to think about it Amy reminded me of Ashtin in a lot of ways. She was naturally shy and innocent, had seen and dealt with more than anyone her age should have to and she had finally found her freedom here, just like Ashtin would soon.

As I remembered her encounter earlier I realized, now out of the moment, how truly impressive a feat it was considering she was pinned on the ground by a man much larger than her who didn't appear to be able to feel pain.

She must be bulletproof. I thought to myself as we entered the Great Hall.

I am very impressed with this story. This has to be THE best story on this website as far as proper grammar, a very well thought out plot, and very detailed descriptions go, as well as the fact that I can actually just imagine what your characters are feeling, thinking, etc while I read. I adore this story, and hope you update again really soon! Keep up the fantastic work! :)

Feel free to skip chica! Your an amazing author and don't let anyone tell you otherwise

@BrokenBVBLover
Right!? I'm antsy myself, but I've got a while to go before I get there :( I think I'll just skip all the boring parts and go straight to the "We know where she is let's go get her!!" Well, not in the next chapter, but maybe the one after that. Anyway, I feel your angst. I can't seem to make the time between now and when they find her short enough :/
