Love And Other Drugs

Will The Real Lucinda, Please Stand Up?

The ballroom of their hotel was wonderfully decked out in red, black and silver balloons, the tables nicely covered in gorgeous red damask cloth with black plates, goblets and silverware. People were dancing, spinning around the middle of the room which had been designated as the place for people to gather so that they could bust a move.

It was a scene that Luxe hadn’t been in the middle of since that terrible Homecoming dance back in high school and she was feeling unsure of herself. Andy had come to the End Of Tour Party as her date, but the two of them had barely had any time to themselves as they kept being pulled apart to do interviews and speak with industry people.

Luxe had just finished speaking with someone from Kerrang- tonight it would be announced if the Dolls, along with BVB, were nominated for any Kerrang Awards, which were in little over a month. Luxe didn’t care if they were nominated-it was just an award for a magazine, but she couldn’t help feel like it might be nice to get some recognition. As she stood there, alone in her slinky silvery dress and spiked red pump heels, Luxe felt utterly alone in this huge sea of people.

The girls were still not speaking to her or well they were barely speaking to her unless they were in front of fans. They were still mad at Luxe and all of the media attention tonight wasn’t making things better. Alex had made this a huge event, inviting all local and international media to this party.

Andy had told her earlier that night as they were getting ready in their room upstairs that usually the end of tour night was just spent at a local bar, but this was beyond what he had expected. Formal invitations had been sent out to all media, record execs and anyone involved in the tour. Luxe and Andy had arrived, ushered in together and then paraded around the room for a bit to talk as a couple about their touring together, their separate albums and future plans.

That had lasted all of ten minutes and then Andy had been pulled away from her to do an interview, while Luxe had been thrust towards photographers and higher ups. Now Luxe was standing off in the corner, alone and watching as her bandmates ran around the room, having the time of their lives.

Char, in her deep red dress and barefeet, was in the middle of the room, dancing the night away with several guys who she probably wasn’t interested in, but she’d bed one of them before the night was over. The guitarist was known as the female Ashley in their tour circle and Char took that title seriously-she’d been with more guys in the past six months than Luxe would of thought possible.

Lulu and Pixie-always together nowadays-were giggling in an opposite corner, sniffing their noses as they sipped at the cocktails in their underage hands. Mads was slinking around the side of the room, her black dress tight across her chest and her now all black hair was pulled back in to a tight ponytail.

“You look lonely.” Mads said as she reached Luxe’s side and the singer only sighed, crossing her arms over her chest as she faced the drummer. Usually she enjoyed Mads’ ribbing, but the girls had been so mean to her that Luxe wasn’t sure she wanted to put up with it anymore.

“Well when your band pretty much hates you…alone time it pretty unavoidable.” Luxe quipped and to her surprise Mads actually chuckled. The two girls stood there, watching in silence as the party unfolded around them and Luxe realized that she didn’t see Andy anywhere.

“I never said I hated you Luxe…I just think you’re being a little bit of a prude right now.” Mads said and Luxe felt her anger rise slightly. She wasn’t being a prude-she was trying not to ruin her life through her addictions.

“Just because I don’t want to drink myself in to a coma Mads doesn’t mean I don’t want to have fun.” Luxe said and the two girls just stared one another down. Mads couldn’t understand what Luxe’s problem was-they were on top of the world and they were allowed to have some fun.

Prude.” Mads said simply and she could see that Luxe was getting annoyed. Her pierced nostrils were flared, her grey eyes on fire and suddenly Luxe was facing the drummer and they were only a few inches apart.

“So says the alcoholic.” Ouch, low blow but Mads didn’t expect much from Luxe.

“I may be an alcoholic, but at least I’m not too chicken shit to still have some fun.”

“I know how to have fun Mads.” Luxe said and Mads only smirked as she nodded her head towards a very distant and darkened corner. There was a group of people, mostly roadies, standing around a table silently. A few people left the group, stumbling in a stupor as they sought out seats and quickly collapsed in to them.

Prove it.” The drummer pushed and Luxe set her eyes in to a scowl as she looked to where Mads was now pointing. The group was thinning out just enough for Luxe to see what they were doing. A small kit was sitting open on the table that they were all circled around and one of the guys was currently rolling a sleeve up, readying his arm for something.

Fine.” Luxe said before walking off in a huff and Mads only smirked as she quickly followed behind the small blonde.

The group was pulled together tightly, but Luxe was small enough to squeeze her way through a few people until she was right up against the small table. One of the BVB roadies had a sleeve rolled up and a small needle was sticking out of his outstretched arm. He was injecting himself with something and suddenly Luxe felt sick to her stomach.

She now recognized the looks on everyone’s faces-total relaxation and stupor-because Luxe had seen that look on her mother’s face every single day. The drug that they were all injecting in to their arms was one that terrified Luxe because she knew what it was capable of…she knew how addicting it could be.

Heroin.

Luxe watched silently as Mads moved to stand in the center and soon enough the black haired girl was tying off her right arm and waiting as someone readied the needle for her. It happened so fast and soon enough Mads was gritting her teeth as the clear liquid quickly disappeared from the needle chamber and began to flow throughout her veins. A soft sigh escaped her ruby red lips and Mads only smiled as she rested her eyes on Luxe.

Would the singer go through with it? Or would she chicken out just like she had been for the past few weeks? Mads, even in her stupendous high, was smirking at Luxe in a way that she knew would make the singer give in.

Luxe inhaled deeply, unsure of what she should do, but before she knew it someone was handing her the band to tie off her arm and it seemed so automatic. Luxe had never done something this serious, but she had seen her mother do it so many times that Luxe felt like she was a pro at it already.

A guy to her left with a scraggly beard and beer stains on his shirt, was getting the needle for her and soon enough Luxe was taking it in between her black painted fingers and holding out her left arm. She looked down at her pale and unmarked skin, wondering what it would look like after this and then she slowly placed the needled against the soft barrier.

There wasn’t much resistence and she hissed as the cold needle penetrated her delicate skin and Luxe stopped. It wasn’t too late to remove the needle and walk away, but something inside of her told her that she needed to do this. She needed a release, she had been dying all week without her Valium-running around a nervous wreck but Andy had been adamant. Andy wasn’t around right now and so with a deep breath and a determined look on her face, Luxe injected herself with the lovely drug for the very first time.

Her veins felt like they were on fire at first-Luxe could feel the liquid burning its way through her system, but she knew that there was no going back. As she finished and the drug was spent, Luxe slowly removed the needle from her arm and tossed it in to the small bag of used needles that would be disposed of discreetly.

Luxe stumbled away from the table, her high heels slipping on the wooden floor slightly as she tried to make her escape. She felt woozy and tired and suddenly she felt herself being pushed in to a chair and a glass was being thrust in to her hand. Mads was beside her, a goofy smile on the drummer’s lips as she sipped from her glass.

Luxe followed her lead and realized that Mads had given her water and as Luxe gulped at the liquid she hadn’t realized how thirsty she really was. This water tasted kind of funny, but it made her limbs go numb and soon enough Luxe felt like she was floating above the room.

“How’re you feeling over there?” Mads asked her and Luxe only smiled, nodding her head as it lolled back and rested on the chair back behind her. Luxe felt completely relaxed, but there was also a sense of urgency within her. What was going to happen is Andy walked up on her right now? What would he say? Would he know that she was flying high?

“Sleepy. I think I should go upstairs.” To Luxe it sounded like perfectly good English, but to those around her it sounded like a slurring mess that barely made any sense.

“No! Stay and party with me!” Mads called out to her, but Luxe was already up, out of her chair and stumbling her way towards the door.

It seemed to take forever for her to make it to the elevator, but soon enough the party had been left behind and Luxe found herself going up. She thought she was flying and even reached back to touch her own wings, but then grew disappointed when she realized that there was nothing there expect for the thin material of her dress.

This dress-she hated it and soon Luxe was pulling it up and over her head, exposing her naked chest to the empty elevator but she didn’t care. The dress fell to the floor and Luxe stood there, her back against the cold metal wall of the car and she closed her eyes.

Was she really flying? Or was she falling? Luxe’s eyes shot open and she looked around nervously-had anyone seen her? What would happen if they came looking for her? A nail made its way to her lips and as the elevator came to a stop, Luxe had bitten her perfectly manicured nail down to the quick.

Aww, Andy bit his nails when he was nervous and at that thought Luxe felt her heart grow light. She loved Andy, so much that it was almost hard to breathe when she thought about him, but what was going to happen now? Andy would be so disappointed in her if he found out what she had done…he would probably hate her.

The elevator came to a stop and before exiting Luxe reached down, rooting through her discarded clothes until she finally came across her room key. Leaving the dress behind her on the floor of the elevator, Luxe stumbled her way down to her room, holding on to the wall to try and stay on her feet. She laughed as she tripped, falling to the floor and laying there for a moment.

This carpet was so soft, she couldn’t help but wonder where they got it from and she would have to ask the desk clerk in the morning while they were checking out. Finally coming to her knees, Luxe could tell that she had done some damage when she had fallen. Her elbows her, the red marks angry looking but she didn’t care.

A wooden door was her only barrier between her and sleep and at first Luxe pounded against the heavy wood, thinking that somehow that would get her what she wanted. Why was this door not opening ? Finally Luxe remember the key in her hand and with a shrill laugh she held it up to the electronic lock and laughed louder as there was a small clicking noise and a green light appeared. She tried to open the door, but she was too slow and soon enough the green light turned red.

Dammit.

Trying again, Luxe laughed once more as the light turned green-why was this so amusing? Finally after two more tries and some serious amount of focusing, Luxe was able to get the door open and enter her room.

It was just as she and Andy left it-a mess. Usually Luxe wasn’t this messy, but with Andy around and the both of them trying to get ready for the party, it was hard to try and keep things clean. Stumbling around and almost breaking her face on a stray shoe in the middle of the floor, Luxe found her way to the bed and collapsed on top of it. She just wanted to sleep, but as she managed to crawl under the covers and lay flat on her back, Luxe found that sleep was eluding her in that moment. Instead of shutting her eyes to the world, she found herself staring up at the ceiling and wondering something.

How in the hell was she ever going to be Lucinda Abernathy again?

@Giacobra

I'm so glad you found this little gem. Sadly this was my last full story, but I do have a few other serial stories on this site which are different from this one, but just as well written. You can find all of them in my profile<3

So I can honestly say I didn't discover this story until recently. When I first started reading it I knew it would be one of my favorites from this site. I saw the sad ending coming but dear god I was still not prepared in any way. You wrote everything so genuinely and in a way that showed an amazing range of real and raw emotions. I may or may not have been crying profusely through the last chapters. This was a beautiful, bittersweet, and amazing story and I look forward to anything else you may ever decide to write. Thank you

You do a wonderful job getting the reader emotionally involved in this story, and I'm really glad that I was able to read this wonderfully written piece. Thank you for all of the time and hard work that went into this story. It is definitely one of the best that I have read in a really long time.
