Won't Amount to Much

Meeting the Band

Mara was waiting backstage with me. Backstage! To a fucking Black Veil Brides concert. I dug my long black nails into the palms of my hands, partially to make sure I was awake and not dreaming, and also so I don't go bat shit crazy. Just Breath, I remind myself. They don't want to meet some crazy fan. They are people to. Act normal, I thought.

“Can you believe it?” Mara asked for the umpteenth time.

“Hardly,” I reply, giving her my same answer as before. We had bee instructed to wait in a small room backstage with a group of other people. The band was supposed to come meet us right before they were supposed to go on stage. There was supposed to be enough time for them to get a few pictures in, a few autographs, and we were supposed to receive some limited edition poster that the band would sign, but it was starting to seem like they would never be here in time to do any of that.

“When do you think we'll get to meet them?” Mara asked, ever the impatient one.

“I don' know when do you think, Ash?” said a voice behind us. Mine and Mara's heads whipped around so fast, I think I almost got whiplash. Standing in the doorway, was Andy Biersack and Ashley Purdy. CC, Jinxx, and Jake were all milling behind them. I dug my nails in deeper to keep from exploding.

Mara wasted no time fawning over the band, “Hi, I'm Mara!” she said with enthusiasm, but not to much to scare the band away. She held out her hand in front of Ashley, her favorite. They other people in the room rushed forward, and somehow I found myself in the back of the group.

A moment later Mara found her way over to me. “Aren't you supposed to head out afterward?” I asked her.

“I decided to sneak back here. I couldn't leave you alone back here.”

“Is that the only reason you came back.”

“Of course! It's your eighteenth birthday. Tonight is all about you,” she said with a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

“So, its your birthday?” asked an all to familiar voice behind me. I whipped my head around again to see Andy as well as the rest of the band.

“Yeah,” I said, returning my nails to my palms.

“Well happy birthday...” said Andy as he offered me a hand to shake.

“Darlene,” I responded as I gulped in air. Andy Biersack, my fucking idol was wishing me a happy birthday.

“Happy birthday, Darlene,” said the rest of the band.

“Thanks,” I managed.

“So do you want to get an autograph or a picture?” Andy asked. I barely managed a nod as I handed him my poster I had received. He quickly signed it before passing it along the table. I heard an almost inaudible snort behind me and turned to see Mara wiggling her eyebrows in a gesture that meant get ya some. I merely rolled my eyes. She knew the insane crush I had on Andy Biersack. It's a bit of a cliché to have a crush on the main vocalist of a band, believe me, I know, but I can't help it.

“Can I get a picture too?” I asked.

“Certainly,” Andy responded. He stood up along with the rest of the band as Mara handed our cameras to the person manning the photography. Andy wound his arm around my waist, not in a intrusive way, but in a way that people pose for photos, but that doesn't mean I didn't blush some.

Snap! Snap! The photos are taken.

“It was nice meeting you!” Mara yells out as we leave the room.

“You too!” Ashley says with a wink in her direction.

“Bye,” I manage to say with a wave to the band.

“Enjoy the show,” Andy says with a wave in my direction.

As we are making our way into the large theater where the concert is being held, Mara manages to yell above the roar that is starting to build outside, “I think I sensed a connection between you and Andy back there.”

“Are you sure that that wasn't between you and Ashley?” I ask with a giggle.

“I'm pretty sure.”

“Whatever. It was probably nothing. Let's go and enjoy the show.”

“Whatever you say,” Mara says.

~*~*~

It had been about a month since the concert, which was amazing. I loved every moment of it, even though I'm pretty sure there wasn't any connection between me and Andy. Besides, he has Juliet.

As I was walking through the halls in school, Mara ran up to me.

“Guess what band needs new people in charge of their merchandise for their upcoming tour?” she asked excitedly.

“I don't know,” I told her nonchalantly. I've never been one for guessing games. I get frustrated to easily.

“Guess!” Mara insisted.

“I'd rather not.”

“Fine. It's Black Veil Brides. Gramps found out about it from his friend's cousin's friend or whatever. Anyways, the point is, Gramps pulled a few strings, and we have an interview for the job tomorrow afternoon!”

“I can't do that this summer. I have to get ready for college next year.”

“Dar-”

“I have to go!”

“I know that, but you don't have to be so stressed out about it. You've already proved so many people wrong just by getting into the best college in the state.”

“Yeah, but I also have to pass college, Mar.”

“To prove who wrong?”

“Everyone! Everyone who said I would probably drop out of high school after the incident. Just everyone!” I yell at her.

“Dar, you don't have to prove anything to anyone. Those who love you, we think you're already really smart and amazing. Just think about it.”

“We can talk about this later. I have calculus,” I say as I turn into my classroom without waiting for a response.

I really like this story so far. Though I have seen several others take the whole "merch girl" angle in their stories, most of the protagonists have been solely motivated by getting to know their idols or their crushes in the band. Most protagonists also have a similar tortured past to Darlene, but instead of letting her rape consume her and overtake her life, she decided to get help and prove everyone wrong. Darlene is using her weakness and letting it become a strength, and it was a nice change to see that she was a bit reluctant to go on tour with her favorite band at first. You have done a fantastic job with this story so far, and I can't wait to see your future updates. Keep up the outstanding work!
