The Metalheads

I've Been Expecting You

The three of us had decided to go back to my house to lay out a game plan. As the guys were discussing various ideas of how to get across the barbed-wire border that closed us in, I had an idea.

I motioned for them to follow me to my parents' bedroom. With their help, I pushed their wardrobe aside, revealing a blank wall.

"What's in the wall?" Ashley asked.

"You'll see," I said, with an unintentional smirk.

I felt around on the wall until my fingers landed on a small crack, and I pulled a door back with my fingers, revealing a long passageway. I looked at the guys, who were speechless and staring in awe.

"Come on," I laughed.

We walked down the dimly lit staircase, that seemed longer than I remembered. I couldn't help but giggle at the guys bumping into the walls as they walked.

"Why is it so dark down here? And where are we going?" Ashley asked, brushing cobwebs out of his face, disgusted that nature could create such horrifying strings of terror.

I entered the room at the end of the passageway and flipped on the dusty light switch, revealing a room full of computers and stacks of paper.

"It looks like an office," Andy observed. I nodded, picking up a few papers off the ground.

"This is my dad's office. He had the same vision I have, but, he had to give it up..." My voice trailed off as more dead memories returned to my brain. Ashley gave me a concerned look.

"Why? What happened?" Andy asked, sitting down at the cluttered desk behind him.

I sighed, and I began to tell the story of how my dad had been imprisoned for the work he had done.

"The enemy police broke into our house and they just dragged him out. I don't know where they took him. He doesn't even remember. All he said afterwards was that he couldn't continue his work."

Andy and Ashley exchanged confused glances.

"So, did they do anything to him?"

I shrugged. "He doesn't remember anything. They could have killed him."

We were all beginning to realize how dangerous our mission really was. We could all risk dying. I could tell Andy wanted to say something, but he stopped himself, not wanting to repeat what had happened an hour ago.

"So, how did you get back down here?" Andy glanced around at all of the dusty computers.

"I figured out where the entrance was a long time ago. I just hadn't remembered it until now."

As the guys looked around some more, I logged on to one of the computers. The large TV-sized screen was hung, crooked, on the wall in front of me. I opened the database of citizens that my dad had hacked into years back, and searched for President Black.

"Whatcha looking for?" Ashley asked, peering over my shoulder.

"I'm looking for our 'President'. I'm trying to see if there's anything about him anywhere that we could use."

Searching through countless files and webpages of people, I found nothing on the strange man. Andy flipped through a stack of papers on the desk, and pulled out one close to the top.

"Hey, what...exactly is this?" He held it up for us to see. From my view, it looked like a map of something. I got up out of the rolling chair to take a closer look.

"It looks like a blueprint of some building or warehouse."

I pushed the stacks of paper out of the way and spread the map out on the desk. I studied it carefully, doing my best to decipher what it actually was. The building was long and rectangular, and it appeared to have at least 4 doors. One on the front, one around the back, and one along each side. The rest of the space around the building looked something like a courtyard with a fountain in the middle.

Something then clicked in my brain. I had seen that fountain before.

"This is a blueprint of the capitol building." I said, recapturing their attention.

I traced my finger around the outline of the building, showing them where the main entrances were.

"We need to find a way to get in without being seen. I'm sure there are guards or police everywhere, so we probably can't use these entrances."

Andy was leafing through the stack again, and he pulled out another map.

"What's this one?" He asked, spreading it out on the desk over the other one.
I looked closer at it, realizing that this was the map we needed.

"This is the one we need."

Ashley looked at it closely. "What's this, here?" He pointed to what looked like a hollow layer of concrete in the roof. An idea popped into my head.

I smiled. "It's our way in."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Darkness was beginning to settle around Metal county, perfect for sneaking around.
About 20 minutes later, we had all changed into special outfits. Our outfits were darker than the night sky, making it more than easy for us to blend in with the environment. Each of us had a belt secured around our waist, clad with tools and weapons. I felt like Batman, tools around my waist, fighting for the innocent in the darkness of the night.

"We look like ninjas," Ashley laughed.

"Yeah, but now we can be completely camouflaged," Andy agreed.

I secured each tool in its small holster, and made sure I had brought the maps with us, which I had made copies of, just in case. My mind was flowing with energy. I couldn't believe we were actually doing this. This is actually happening. I could finally understand what was going on in the world, and avenge Sarah's death. Adrenaline pulsed through my body, and I loved the sensation.

"Babe, you ready to go?" Andy called.

A small spike of feeling shot through my body. He's never called my babe before. I could only smile at him.

"Yeah, I'm coming." I practically jumped down the stairs and out the door. We decided to walk to the border, since going in a car or by motorcycle would be too noisy.

I folded my arms across my chest, mad at myself that I didn't dress warmer. Ashley and Andy walked side by side in front of me, whispering to each other. I walked a little closer to them, trying to listen. I couldn't make out exactly what they were saying, but I could tell they were talking about me. I smirked.

When we neared the border, the two guys stopped.

"Uh, Kat? How exactly do you plan on getting across?" Ashley looked up at the barbed wire. If you were quiet enough, you could hear the electricity buzz through the spiked wires. As if to answer his question, I climbed into the large tree a few feet away from where they stood.

"Not across, over."

Quickly, they too climbed into the tree, Andy had some difficulty because of his long legs, and followed me through the branches. Each step had to be carefully placed, or else we risked falling or being seen. After climbing about 10 feet higher, we made our way across a long sturdy branch that leaned over the capital building, and over the border.

Landing softly on the roof of the capitol building, I helped Andy and Ashley down. We stopped briefly to look at the blueprints.

"So we have to get in here somehow," I whispered, pointing to the hollow layer of the roof.

Andy looked around, and walked over to a spot on the roof. He knelt down, and tried to pull at the roof with his fingers. Ashley and I joined him, also trying to pull away whatever he had found.

With the force of all three of us, we managed to get the hatch open. I stuck my head down in it, peered inside, and gave the all clear. Andy went first, with me following, and Ashley crawled in last.

Once we entered the hollow layer, we stopped to rest and figure out our next move. There were small holes in the concrete, just big enough to let small beams of light through.

"We need to figure out where his office is. It's gotta be one of these here," Andy whispered, pointing to the small holes.

I nodded, looking back at the maps. The rooms weren't labeled clearly, so we would have to find it on our own.

"It doesn't say anything on here," I said. Handing the maps to Ashley, I crawled over to one of the holes and peeked in.

This room was empty, but it looked like a meeting room. Nothing looked strange. I moved on to another hole, skipping the next one. This room was also empty, but it looked like a large office.

"Guys, I think I found it," I whispered. They quickly joined me and looked in too. I paused, trying to think of a way to get down in to the office.

Andy interrupted my thoughts by sliding his arm around my shoulder. Even though it was dark, I could tell his icy blues were staring me down. His touch was electric. It sent flutters throughout my whole body. He pulled me closer to him and kissed my forehead. I couldn't help but grin from ear to ear.

I couldn't even begin to express how much he meant to me now. Just a few months ago, we were nothing but neighbors. It was almost hard to believe how much we had been through already. We had grown so close.

Suddenly, I heard a loud crack, and within seconds, the three of us went crashing down into the room below us. Shards of concrete toppled us. We landed on the ground with a thud. The whole world swirled and went fuzzy. I rubbed my eyes and looked around for the guys. Both of them were sprawled out in front of me, unconscious.

"Ah, hello. I'm so glad you made it," said an eerie, high-pitched voice.

"I've been expecting you."
