The Family Man

Tonight was Halloween and I was helping the kids get into their costumes. I had just finished with Jack, putting on his power ranger helmet.
“Okay, go look in the mirror.” I said.
He ran over to the mirror and posed in front of it.
“Cool!” He said excitedly.
“Now it’s your turn.” I said to Samantha.
I helped her pull on faux leather pants and adjusted her tank top. Then I gave her the faux leather jacket I found and step into her boots. I took the toy guitar I got her and placed it across her shoulders. Then I teased out her hair to make it stick up a little on the side.
“One final touch.” I said. I took some make up and drew lines down her neck with a stitch going down the middle. I drew the two lines on her right cheek and was finished. “Okay, go look.”
She went to the mirror and started jumping up and down. She had found some old pictures of Ashley and decided she wanted to be him for Halloween since she wanted to be just like him when she grew up.
“All right then. Should we go show Daddy?” I asked.
They both nodded their heads vigorously.
“Ashley, we’re ready!” I called into the living room. “Presenting, the red power ranger.” Jack ran into the room and posed with his fists up.
“You ready to save the world Jack?” Ashley asked.
“Yup!” He said.
This was going to be fun, I hadn’t told Ashley what Samantha was going to be. She wanted it to be a surprise. “Now introducing, Ashley Purdy!”
Samantha came running into the room, holding her guitar up. Ashley just looked at her with his mouth open.
“Hey, babe.” Samantha said to him, walking with more confidence than a four year old should have.
“Where did you learn to say that?” Ashley asked, kneeling down to her level.
“Uncle CC, he showed me old pictures of the band.” She replied.
“Ah.” Ashley said, a stunned look on his face.
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“What’s so funny?” He asked.
“She’s you from about six years ago.” I said.
“I guess she is.” He said. “She better not bring any boys home.” He said, half jokingly.
“I think she’s a little young for that. Give it about twelve years, then you can worry about that.” I said, smiling.
Their relationship would be an interesting one, considering I was pretty sure she was going to become a female version of him.

“All right kids, one more house.” I said. We had been out trick or treating for over an hour and it was getting close to 8:00pm.
“Okay Mommy!” The said, running up the driveway to the next house. They rang the doorbell and said. “Trick or Treat.” When a woman opened the door.
“Oh aren’t you sweet.” She said. “And what might you be?”
“I’m the red power ranger.” Jack said proudly.
“And I’m Ashley Purdy.” Samantha said.
The woman gave me a confused look.
I mouthed, ‘bassist for Black Veil Brides.’
She nodded. “Well here you go then.” She gave them both a handful of candy and they turned and came back to me.
“All right then, time to head home.” I said.
They each took a hand and we headed back to the house.

We let the kids each have three pieces of candy before bed, but then we made them put it away. Once they were asleep Ashley came back into our room and joined me on the bed.
“What are you so happy about?” I asked. “The kids are the ones who got candy tonight.”
“I just can’t believe Samantha wanted to dress up as me for Halloween.” He said. “You did a good job with her war paint by the way.”
“Thank you, I had a lot of old pictures to study from.” I replied.
“Did CC give you those too?”
“Him and Andy. They thought it was adorable.” I said. “You know she wants to be just like you when she gets older. Pretty soon you’re going to have to teach her how to play the bass.”
He laughed. “That will most definitely be fun.”
I kissed him. “I love you Ashley.”
