The Family Man

Kindergarten

Samantha and Jack were running through the house playing tag when the doorbell rang. I opened the door to see Juliet standing in front of me.
“Juliet! Come on in!” I said.
“Aunt Juliet!” Jack and Samantha screamed together, running to give her a hug.
She knelt down and pulled them into a big hug. It was so cute. Andy and Juliet spent so much time with us that an early age the kids had just started calling them aunt and uncle. Andy and Juliet didn’t mind, so we let them keep doing it. They were the kids’ godparents after all, so they might as well be family. Especially since Ashley and I were both only children and didn’t have any siblings.
“How are my favourite niece and nephew?” Juliet asked.
“Excited!” Samantha said.
“Oh, and why is that?” She asked.
“We start kindergarten next week!” Jack said.
“Well that sounds fun.” Juliet commented, smiling. “What were you two just playing? I saw you running around.”
“Tag.” Jack said. “And Samantha’s it.” He said, tapping his sister on the shoulder and running in the other direction.
“They sure are energetic.” Juliet said.
“You have no idea.” I replied. “Come into the living room, I want to hear all about your anniversary.”
Andy had finally proposed to Juliet a couple of years ago and they had just had their second anniversary a few weeks ago.
“Well, we decided to spend the weekend away from everything. So we stayed at a small hotel near the beach and just had some us time. The beach was wonderful, nice and relaxing. Getting to spend time together without any distractions was lovely too.” She said.
“That sounds great.”
“Yeah, and that’s not even the best part.” She giggled.
“What else?” I asked.
“I’m pregnant.” She said. “Four weeks in.”
“Oh my God! Juliet that’s great news! I’m so happy for you!” I hugged her.
“You’re going to have to help me. I have no idea what I’m supposed to do.”
“You’re not supposed to know. Whatever doesn’t happen naturally, you figure out along the way.” I laughed. “As I recall, you helped me when I was pregnant with the twins.”
“Yes, but that was years ago, and I wasn’t the one carrying the baby.” She said.
“Good point.” I replied. “I can’t believe this. You and Andy are going to be parents and my kids are about to start school. It’s only been five years, but it feels like it’s been much longer.”
“Wait until their older, then it’ll be going by too fast.” Juliet said.
“Right, that’s when we turn into our mothers.” I laughed.

Ashley’s POV:

“All right, you kids ready for school?” I asked.
“Yup!” They said in unison. I swear, it’s like they really do share a brain the amount of times they say the same thing at the same time.
“I’ll see you at lunch, okay?” Belle said.
“Okay Mommy.” They said together again.
“Come on, let’s go.” I said, taking their hands and leading them to the car. I buckled them into the back of the car and got into the drivers seat.
A short drive later and we were in front of their school.
“Hurry up Daddy!” Jack said as I helped him and Samantha out of the back.
“I’m hurrying.” I said, smiling at his eagerness.
I walked them into the building and found their classroom. I introduced myself to their teacher, Mrs. Thompson. The second I did, they both let go of my hands and ran into the classroom to join the other children.

Belle’s POV:

It was noon and I was waiting for the kids to finish class so that I could take them home. The bell rang and a sea of young children came running out of the class to find their parents. I was looking for the twins when they found me instead.
“Mommy!” They both said.
“Hey, how was school?” I asked.
They both grinned.
“It was great.” Samantha said. “We get free time and they have lots of toys and a playground.”
“Yeah, and we learned the alphabet and how to count to thirty.” Jack said.
It figured he would remember the educational part. They were like the two sides of the brain. Samantha was the creative one and Jack was the analytical one.
“Well it sounds like you two had a great day.” I said.
“Yep!” They both said
