The Ladies Man

Meeting Ashley Purdy

“Belle!” I looked up from my copy of Pride and Prejudice to see my roommate Madison standing in front of me. She was pulling her blond hair up into a messy bun, while holding a piece of paper in her mouth.
“Shall I take that from you?” I asked.
She nodded, and I took the paper. It was purple and had a picture of a cocktail on it. It read, ‘Ladies Night, girls drink free’.
“We’re going.” Madison said.
I shook my head. “No, you’re going. I’m staying here with my book.”
“Please! It’s no fun on my own!” She whined. “Besides, you might meet a cute guy and hit it off.”
I rolled my eyes as I walked to my room. “Fine. But I’m only going to prove you wrong.”
“Prove me wrong at what?” She asked.
“I won’t meet a cute guy. Cute guys talk to tall, blue-eyed blonds like you. Not girls like me. I’m average. Average brown hair, dull green eyes, not skinny. Shall I continue?” I looked at her pointedly.
“What are you talking about? I’d kill for your straight hair, your eyes sparkle and you’re not skinny, you’ve got awesome curves!” She said.
“Well, when you put it that way.”
“Yay!” She ran into her room to get ready. I did the same. I pulled out a nice red tank and my boot cut jeans, I paired them with ankle high boots and then went to work on my hair. It didn’t need much work and normally I didn’t do anything to it, so I just ran a brush through it. I put on a little lip gloss and stood out by the door waiting for Madison.
“Are you coming?” I asked.
“Just putting on some finishing touches.” She replied. She walked out of her room in a purple halter-top, short skirt and heels. She also had eye shadow, mascara and lip stick on. I loved this girl, we were best friends, but it was moments like this when I could see what complete opposites we were.
“Oh! I almost forgot.” I said, feeling my chest. I ran into my room and grabbed my Black Veil Brides pentagram necklace. I almost never took it off. They were my favourite band and I always wanted to feel as if they were with me. “Okay, let’s go.”

We got to the club and I waited while Madison had to show her ID. Madison was 24 years old now, but she was only five foot two and had a bit of a baby face. She still got mistaken for a teenager on a regular basis. I on the other hand never had to show my ID. I was five foot seven and had what people called a mature face. People had always thought I was older than I was, even when I was young. It didn’t matter anymore though, seeing as I had just recently turned 25.
“Come on! I wanna dance!” Madison grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the dance floor. I danced with her for a while, not really getting into it. Then Moves Like Jagger came on and I was jumping along to the beat. Another couple of songs and I went to get myself a drink. I order a strawberry daiquiri and watched all the people dancing, thrusting and shaking on the dance floor. About halfway through my drink my eyes fell on Madison again. She was talking to a couple of girls I remember seeing at her work. She was a salesperson at the local mall and had lots of friends there. Guess I could head home early then. I went over to let her know where I was going.
“I’m packing it in for the night.” I said over the loud music.
“What? You haven’t even met a guy yet.” She said.
“My point made then. I’ll see you back at the apartment.”
“Okay, I’m gonna stay here with the girls.” She gestured to her friends.
“You make sure she gets home in one piece.” I said.
“You got it.” A girl named Stacie said.
I nodded my thanks and made my way back to the bar to grab my purse. As I was collecting my things I heard a voice coming from behind me.
“Can I buy you a drink?” He asked. His voice sounded so familiar… It couldn’t be.
I closed my eyes, counted to five and took a deep breath before turning around. Standing there in front of me was Ashley Fucking Purdy. I looked around and then looked at him with a questioning look. “Were you talking to me?” I asked.
“Yes, unless there is some other beautiful girl in the immediate vicinity.” He said.
“You do know where we are right?” I waved my hand around, gestured to all the hot girls dancing and talking around us. “Does that line ever work?”
“Most of the time, yes.” He said with a smirk.
He seemed so sure of himself, well that was about to change. I knew about his reputation with women. I for one was not going to end up being another one night stand. “Well, it was nice talking to you, but I really have to be leaving now.” I said, pushing past him.
“Wait, don’t I get a chance?” He asked.
I turned my head and looked him straight in the eyes. “No.” I continued walking until I was out of the bar.
It was a quick walk back to the apartment and all I could think about was how much I just wanted to curl up with a good book
