The Outlaw's Opposite~~Ashley Purdy

Chapter Five--Seven Unread Messages

Ashley’s P.O.V
I rub my hands down my face, feeling the soft stubble of a beard starting to grow. I haven’t shaved since I found Natasha last week with all the pills. I’ve slept at the hospital twice, both nights after she flatlined on her second day in the hospital. They had to restart her heart. She’s in some kind of coma—I don’t get it. The doctors use words and terms I have no clue about.

“Come on.” I whisper from my uncomfortable, plastic chair by her bed. “Wake up.”
I sit, staring at her pale face, closed eyes, purple-ish, pink lips. I check my watch. It’s five o’clock. Trying to pass the time, I pull out my phone. Seven texts just since this morning.

CC: yesterday: We missed you at practice. Do you want us to visit you at the hospital?
Andy: Come out with us!! We’re leaving at five. Meet me at my house?
Jake: Ashley, are you okay?
CC: is she awake yet?
Jinxx: How are you doing?
Juliet: All the guys are worried about you. Why don’t you text them?
CC: did you sleep at the hospital again?

I scowl at my screen and click our group chat. I text a simple, two word sentence. I’m fine. But it’s a lie. I’m not fine. I want Natasha to wake up. It’s all my fault. It’s my fault she might die. If I didn’t pry into her business, she wouldn’t have drove off in the rain. She wouldn’t have gotten in an accident. She wouldn’t have overdosed. She would be awake. It’s all my fault.

I slowly reach out and touch her freezing arm. “Natasha, I’m sorry. Wake up.” I mumble, closing my eyes and resting my head on the edge of her bed. I rub her arm gently, letting out a loud sigh. My messy, bedraggled hair falls over, splaying across the bed sheets. I can’t remember the last time I brushed it. “Ashley…” A female voice says quietly.

I shoot up, sliding back in my seat in excitement but it wasn’t Natasha. She still lays silently, IVs and other medications sticking in her arms, a heart monitor connected as well. She doesn’t move an inch. I look back at the door. Juliet, Andy, CC and Lauren stand in the doorframe quietly, watching me. “I’m fine.” I growl, quoting my text before the even ask or say anything. “No, Ashley, you’re not.” CC replies, crossing his arms. “Fuck you.” I spit, turning away from him.

“Ashley, you can’t just stay here until she wakes up.” Lauren says gently, swaying on the balls of her feet. I can see her reflection in the vase of flowers Natasha’s friend Lindsay brought her that sit on the bedside table along with Get Well Soon cards from the band and their girlfriends/wives. “Watch me.” I hiss under my breath.

“What’s the deal with her? You didn’t even know her that well. I mean, I know you stayed here after she was in the car crash but you haven’t really spent much time with her when she was…awake.” Andy points out. “I know.” Is all I say back. “Know what?” CC demands softly. “I know that I did this! I know it’s my fault that she’s here!” I shout, jumping up from my chair. Andy raises his eyebrows, scrunching up his nose.

“That isn’t true!” CC fights back. “You don’t know what happened!” I scream, clenching my fists. I’m this close to punching him and Andy. “Tell us.” Lauren says firmly yet quietly. I slowly sit back in my seat. “About a month ago, the day of the car crash, the day after we met her at the bar, we were out for coffee. I really, really liked her but I asked her something. I don’t really remember. I asked her why her friend always tried to get her to go out, something like that. She got up and ran to her car. She went in the ditch and called me. Called me before paramedics.” I mumble.

I look away, breathing out heavily and continuing. “She was passed out in her own blood by the time I got there with the ambulances. I didn’t know if she was alive. She woke up at my house. She told me about how she lost her fiancé and the baby she was pregnant with in less than two months. A week later, I left. I left her. I knew she was upset—she kept waking up from nightmares—but I left. And she overdosed. And now she might not ever wake up.” I finish, tears of guilt and anger building in the corners of my eyes.

“How is it your fault?” Andy asks in confusion, glancing at Natasha. “I made her drive away! I left her alone! God dammit, it’s my fault.” I look down and let out a strangled sob, hunching over with my elbows on my knees. Lauren rushes over and wraps her skinny arms around me. I ignore her, letting out slow, angry tears. “It is not your fault. You can’t believe that.” She whispers sweetly, pulling away and sitting beside me. “It isn’t.” Juliet persists sternly.

CC and Andy nod. They all join me, sitting beside her bed in the chairs. Jinxx and Jake show up, along with Ella and Sammi. They sit down, the girls on the guys’ laps. No one says anything although I feel worried looks directed at me. I stay hunched down, looking up through my bangs at Natasha.

The white hospital room is soon dark, night rolling through the single window. “We have to go. We’ll be back though, Ash.” Andy says, laying a supportive hand on my shoulder before he and Juliet head out. A nurse strolls in, checking Natasha over. She adjusts a few of the IVs, marking some things down on her clipboard and throwing me a pitiful stare. I glare back until she leaves. Soon, Jinxx and Sammi leave. Then Jake and Ella. It’s midnight before CC carefully stands up and stretches out his arms. “Go home tonight, Ashley. You can come back in the morning.” He says, walking out of the room with Lauren. They whisper; about me I’m sure.

I don’t plan on leaving. I’m too emotionally and physically drained. I need sleep but I don’t dare close my eyes—what if she woke up or flatlined again?

Just as my watch turns to two AM, Natasha shoots up in bed, shocking me. She has quiet tears pouring down her face. She rips the IVs and cords out of her arms, falling forward. She starts to cough and sputter, a trickle of blood dripping down her chin from her blue lips. Her eyes are frozen in panic and pure fear, her chest rising slowly and falling dramatically as she fights to breathe. I jump up and run out the door, looking for a nurse.

When I finally find one, I tap her. “Natasha woke up! She can’t breathe!” I shout, pointing down the hall to Natasha’s room. She follows me, paging a doctor. When we get there, my heart plummets in fear. Natasha sits slumped over in bed, her hands on her chest as she chokes, coughing loudly. The blood has started to spill from her mouth to her collar bone. Her eyes are wet and shiny with fresh, scared tears as she reaches a single hand out, towards me. “A-A-Ash-sh-sh…” She stutters, another heaving fit of coughs strangling her.

A doctor rushes in, looking at Natasha. “Comfort her.” He demands. I nod and drop onto the floor beside her bed. “Shh, shh. It’ll all be okay, love. You’ll be fine. Shh…” I hush, using my sweater sleeve to wipe away the scarlet red blood. “Calm down, okay? Try for me. Relax.” I soothe as gently as I can although I’m panicking inside. What’s wrong with her? What will the doctor do? Is she going to be okay?

She nods after a pause, her coughs slowly lessen. She drops her chin to her neck while he breathing slowly evens out. Her eyes droop closed, her lips slightly parted. I slowly rub her matted, sweaty hair back, holding her hand. “Shh…”
