The Mortician's Daughter

Arm Yourself With Words of Hate

Two weeks passed and Dahlia still refused to speak to Andy and Ashley. They had made innumerable attempts in getting even the slightest bit out of her. She received texts upon texts from Ashley while if she even left my room to pee, Andy was hounding her. But the girl wasn't ready to let go yet. She felt played, less than human, like she was just a toy in their testosterone filled battle over who could win her over. This disaster could have been avoided if the two acted like adults and talked rationally about it alone and with Dahlia. But no, they had to be selfish and disregard her feelings as they used her in an emotional game of tug-of-war.

She was sat in her bed staring at her phone. Ashley wouldn't stop texting and calling her to the point where she had to turn the device off all together. There was a soft, almost hesitant, knock on my door and the red-head groaned. Andy wouldn't leave until she let him in; he would stand there and wait her out till she had to use the bathroom or eat. That's when he'd bombard her.

Standing from her bed, she trudged over to the door and less than enthusiastically turned the knob and pulled it open. Her hazel eyes widened slightly at what she saw.

"What are you doing here, Ashley?" She asked bluntly.

The long haired man smiled sheepishly before nudging the door with his knuckle. "May I come in?"

Dahlia's teeth clenched as I stared him down. She wasn't in the mood for this. After a minute or so of awkward silence she let out a sigh and moved aside. She closed the door behind him and faced the tattooed man with her arms crossed. "What are you doing here, Ashley?" She asked again. He turned around and sat on her bed with his hands clasped tightly in his lap.

"Why haven't you been returning my texts and phone calls?"

She rolled my eyes. "I was kinda hoping you'd get the message." She felt a pang in her chest at the frown that tugged at his mouth but forced that feeling aside. She had to be strong, she had to let him know how much he and Andy had hurt her.

After a moment of silence he spoke up. "I really am sorry, y'know.."

"Ash, I'm not in the mood for this." She placed her hands on her hips with a scowl on her face. "If you came here to give me some half assed apology thinking everything will go back to normal then you might as well leave." Something in his brown eyes changed at the sound of her hostility and he stood up, stalking over to her and backing her up against the door. She had mini flashbacks of Andy doing the same thing and swallowed thickly as she broke out in a light sweat.

"Listen, I didn't come here thinking you'd forgive me right off the bat. I didn't even come here asking for your forgiveness." Ashley's voice raised with frustration.

"Then why did you come?" Dahlia asked, her chest rising in falling rapidly.

"I came here to tell you I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry for sticking you in the middle of this shit between Andy and I, that wasn't fair. I really do care about you, Dahlia, more than I've ever cared about another person. You make me feel things I've never felt before and I've spent the past few weeks kicking my ass over hurting you. I don't expect you to forgive me, I just want you to know that I am truly sorry. You're an amazing and beautiful young woman and quite frankly, Andy and I don't deserve you." Ashley let out a breathe that tickled her plump lips before stepping back. She moved away from the door and bit her lip, Ashley's apology swirling in her head.

She opened my mouth to speak when another knock cut her off. She opened the door and looked up at Andy. His blue eyes met hers before they flickered to Ashley. "What are you doing here?" He stepped into the room and she put her dainty hands on his chest to hold him back. He had the same look in his eyes that he did every time he saw Ashley.

"I came to apologize to Dahlia." Ash said plainly. His jaw was clenched and it was clear he was holding back from lashing out.

"Well she doesn't want to see you so I suggest you get the hell out of here." Andy growled, stepping forward despite Dahlia's best efforts to keep him back. She allowed her arms to drop to her sides as tears of anger and utter helplessness pooled in her eyes. She moved to the other side of the room and got a duffle bag out of her closet.

Ashley laughed, his self-restraint wearing thin. "You act like she wants to see you, Andy. See, we're in the same boat here. She hates us both."

Andy glared and the two men stepped forward, getting in each others face like they had so many times before. Dahlia sniffled as she looked on but it went unnoticed so she began packing clothing, enough to last her at least a month, maybe more. "Shut the fuck up. She doesn't hate me, she just hasn't given me the chance to explain. When she does she'll realize what an asshole you are and that I've been right all along."

"I'm an asshole?" Ashley snarled when Andy nodded. "No, YOU'RE an asshole! You make up some bullshit lie about being in love with her and blah blah blah. You're such a selfish prick that you can't let me have her!" He shoved Andy who, in retaliation, shoved him back.

While this was all happening, Dahlia gathered all of her necessities with tears streaming down her face. When she was finally finished, Dahlia re-entered her bedroom with two large bags in hand, immediately catching the attention of the two men.

"Lia, what's going on? Why do you have those bags?" Andy wondered. The two man looked equally confused.

"I'm leaving, Andy! I can't take this anymore!" The red-head yelled, her voice cracking. She tried brushing past them but her arm was gripped none too gently. "Let go of me." She hissed.

"No," Andy said. "You're not going anywhere. This is ridiculous, Dahlia!" His fingers were still tightly curled around her forearm as he stared down at her.

"Yes I am! I'm sick of this shit! You guys proclaim to care so much about me but for the past few weeks you've been acting like my feelings don't matter!" Dahlia ripped her arm from Andy's grasped before pointing at him. "You hid your feelings for me for over ten years and decided that me having feelings for a guy is the perfect time to express them. You've done shit to me the past few weeks that I never thought you would do." Her voice cracked as all the emotions she felt came rushing forward. Ashley had a somewhat smug look on his face which made Dahlia avert that finger to him. "And you, don't act like you haven't done anything. "..can't let me have her"? I'm not a fucking object, Ash! Do you know how shitty that makes me feel?"

Ashley took a step forward. "I didn't mean it like that, I.."

She put her hand up, stopping any further explanation. "Stop. Until you two get your act together, I'm leaving." Before the men could make stop her, Dahlia left the apartment.

After a few minutes, Dahlia sat down on a curb, her cheeks stained with tears. She didn't know who to call or where to stay. One name popped into her head but Dahlia had made a promise to herself that she would never go crawling back to that man ever again. What else was she to do, though? She didn't have anyone else. All of her family lived halfway across the country and she didn't have many friends that would take her in. Dahlia sighed. There was only one option.

The phone rang three times before an all too familiar voice spoke on the other line. "I thought you'd never call."

Dahlia could practically see the smirk on the mans face as he spoke. She swallowed thickly. "Can.. Can you come get me?" Dahlia heard raspy chuckling which made her tears start up again.

"On my way."

p.s. as you can see this chapter is in third person. this has been my preferred style of writing and I will, from now on, write all of my stories in the third person. I'll get around to editing the previous chapters soon.
