We Don't Belong

“Where are we going?” I asked as we walked out of the hotel, Andy had his arm slung around my shoulders.
“It’s a surprise.” He answered.
“Ugghh! Is that like you’re new favorite word?” I hated surprises!
“Nope. I’m just forbidden to tell you.” He replied.
“Are we even going anywhere?” I asked after about five minutes of walking.
“Will you be patient? You’re driving me crazy.”
“We both know that neither one of us is very patient.” I pointed out. “Because, you sure as hell have no patience.”
“Hey I’m not going to deny that.” We came up to a big wall that I recognized belonged to the zoo. “Now we’re going to have to climb this.” He said stopping. “I’m going to need you to hoist me up.”
“Pfft…fat chance.” I answered.
He smirked, “Yeah I’m just kidding, we’re going through the back entrance.” He grabbed my hand and a few feet away there was a metal door with a keypad next to it.
Andy pressed some buttons on the keypad and there was a click. He opened the door, “After you.” He said smiling proudly.
“I don’t even want to know how you knew that.” I teased as I walked through the door.
He grabbed a hold of my hand and led me through the dimly lit zoo. “I have my connections.”
“Hey look your relatives!” I teased, pointing to the gazelles. He was the one that would always bring up his gazelle like legs.
“Ha, ha. Real funny.” He said sarcastically and looked at his phone. “So where do you want to go?” He asked putting it back into his back pocket. “We have the whole zoo to ourselves.”
“Can we see the snakes?!” I asked excitedly. They were my second favorite animal next to gorillas. I always wanted a Burmese python but my parents would never allow me to have one and Katelyn was afraid of them.
Andy laughed, “Sure.”
We went to the reptile house to see all of the awesome snakes. Then we went to see the giraffes because that’s where Andy wanted to go.
“Hey, look they’re coming over to us…they must think you’re one of them.” I joked.
“Last time I take you to the zoo.” He answered pulling me into a hug as I laughed at his expense. He ruffled up my hair.
“Hey!” I whined.
“I have someplace specific I wanted to take you.” He smiled and kissed my forehead. He let go of me and grabbed my hand.
He led me to another big building, where someone met us at the door. “Hey Andy what’s up man?” The guy greeted us.
“Nothing much. Nick this is Riley, my girlfriend.” I still wasn’t used to those words. “Riley, this is Nick, my connection.”
“It’s nice meeting you.” I replied to Nick.
“Nice meeting you too. Are you enjoying yourself?”
I nodded, “Yeah, it’s been awesome.”
“Well Andy and I have set up something really cool.” Nick answered. “Follow me.” He led us further into the building and I could see that it was the ape house. Where they housed some of the monkeys and gorillas at night.
Nick led us into a bare room that had a blue carpeted floor and trees and monkeys painted all around the room. It seemed like one of those class rooms that the zoo would teach little kids about stuff when they visited on field trips. “Wait here, I’ll be right back.”
“What’s going on?” I asked turning to Andy.
“Oh, you’ll see.” He said with a big grin on his face.
A few minutes later Nick came back in with a young gorilla in his arms.
“What?” I said surprised.
“This is Rosie; she’s one of the newest additions to the gorilla exhibit.” Nick explained. “She’s a little over a year old. Would you like to hold her?” Nick asked me.
“I would love to!” I answered. He handed her over to me and I grinned. “She’s so cute!” I cooed, holding her like a baby. She was so furry and small and adorable. She tried grabbing at my hair. “This is so cool.” I occupied her with my finger so she was grasping it, instead of trying for my hair.
I looked up at Andy to see him taking a video with his phone. “Who’s the best boyfriend in the world?”
I laughed and rolled my eyes, “You are.”
He laughed, pressed something on his screen and then put it down.
“You can set her down on the floor, so that you can play with her.” Nick said from his spot at the door.
I nodded and slowly got down on the floor and then put Rosie down. Andy sat down nest to me and Rosie walked right up to him. She started playing with his face and hair, making me laugh.
“Seems like you attract any female of the primate persuasion.” I commented as she poked his lip ring and then pulled her hand back quickly.
“Yeah I’m just that attractive.” Andy answered back.
We played with Rosie for a little while longer before we had to leave. It was awesome, like playing with a little kid but more hairy. By far the best date I had ever been on.
“You’re going to have a hard time toping this.” I was still grinning as we walked out of the zoo.
Andy put his arm around my shoulders and pulled me closer to him. He kissed my head, “I love you Riley.”
I stopped in my tracks. “What?” I asked stunned. Did He really just say what I think he said?
He smirked, “I-love-you.” He said slowly. “I can spell it out for you if you want me to.”
I was speechless for a few moments. What was I supposed to say? I was supposed to say it back, DUH! “I love you too Andy. And I have for a while I think. I was just too stubborn to admit it.” I babbled on. “And your mom…” Andy leaned in and kissed me, stopping me from continuing on.

“That was the biggest cliché moment ever.” I laughed.
“And you just had to ruin it.” Andy said and then put his arm back around my shoulders.
