Days Are Numbered

1/1

You sat beside your best friend's hospital bed, holding his hand in yours. It was never meant to be this way. You were meant to live forever, both of you.
"Remember when decided to climb up on your roof at in three AM one night?" Andy asked, chuckling before coughing for almost two minutes.
"I do," You replied, trying to hide the sadness in your voice. You hated seeing Andy cough so much. "You brought your guitar up with you and you sung to me."
Andy smiled at you before closing his eyes. Your heart ran a million miles an hour, was he alright?
His eyes opened again and you remembered that when people were sick like Andy was sick, it was hard to do things like keep your eyes open for long amounts of time.
It'd been eight months. eight months ago Andy found out that he had stage four lung cancer. Everyone knew that it was because of how much he would smoke each day but no one said it in front of him.
Each day he got weaker and weaker. A month after finding out that he had cancer, Andy quit the band. He went on his Tumblr and made a short post explaining what why he had left the band. When he woke up the next morning his phone was going off like crazy, people wouldn't stop tweeting him.
Then he left. No one heard or saw Andy for about four months. He left his phone in his apartment along with his laptop. There was no knowing where he was or if he was still alive.
You were worried beyond belief. The band missed Andy but none of them knew how to find him.
When the four months was up, he came back. Andy's skin was paler than usual, he'd lost a lot of weight and he knew that he had no other choice. Andy had to go for treatment.
At first doctors tried to operate on his infected lung. It didn't work, the cancer had spread. Doctors had said that the cancer would eventually reach either his brain or his heart and he would die instantly.
You didn't want to watch your friend turn into nothing right in front of you. A doctor had suggested chemotherapy but Andy said that he wanted to die with his hair on his head and refused further treatment.
"We all die eventually. I guess I was just meant to pass before everyone else," Andy said to you.
The two of you were sitting in his house with his cats. Andy had a Misfits CD playing in the background and you were sitting with your head rested in his lap.
"You're only 23, Andy. There's so much of your life left to live," You sighed.
"I feel as if I've lived enough. I reached my dreams. I was in a band, I changed lives and now I'm going to die."
Andy had accepted the fact that he was going to die. He didn't know when it was going to happen but he had accepted that it was going to happen whether he liked it or not.
He refused to talk to any of the members of his band. The only thing he'd said (which was said on the day that he had come back from being away in God knows where) to them was 'Don't let the fans go without a singer; replace me.'
On that day you watched as Ashley cried. He didn't want his best friend to die. Jinxx tried to talk him out of it but Andy kept his mouth shut.
There was a night where you thought he was gone forever. The two of you were snuggled on his sofa, arms around each other when Andy started coughing.
He wouldn't stop. You thought that he was going to die right in front of you.
Once he was taken to hospital you learned that it was an asthma attack. That was a month ago, they hadn't let Andy leave the hospital. He was put in a permanent bed rest.

You looked down at Andy's tattooed arms. You thought that if anyone wanted to shake his hand they'd break his arm easily. They looked like sticks. You missed the Andy you grew up with.
"I wish Danny was here, then he could tell us some funny tour stories and lighten this place up a bit," Andy said.
You were half sitting on his hospital mattress with one of your legs hanging off the side and Andy's head pressed against the side of your stomach.
"Yeah, me too," You replied.
Andy pushed him away just like he had everyone else. The only people that he saw frequently was you (because you were with him every day, only going home to take a shower and get changed) and his parents, they visited once a week on a Tuesday.
"Remember the band's first concert? Only fifteen people showed up," Andy chuckled. "The we started playing Warped Tour with thousands of people in the crowds."
He coughed again and a tear slid down his cheek. You held back your tears as you saw his whole chest convulse as he coughed. Coughing shouldn't make you do that, he was too weak to cough properly anymore.
You nodded your head and smiled as much as you could. "You're an amazing person Andy, please don't forget that." You reminded him.
Andy's pierced lips curled into a smile.
You held his hand in yours. Andy rubbed his thumb against the back of your hand as he looked up into your eyes.
For a second his blue eyes looked so full of life, like he'd never had cancer. For a second his eyes looked the same way they did when he was on stage. For a second everything was normal again.
"I…love…you…Y/N," Andy didn’t finish saying your name, he was stopped by his heart monitor making that consistent beep noise.
Tears rimmed your eyes. His hand felt limp against yours.
Doctors pushed you out of the room. One of the nurses told you that they were doing everything they could to save him.
An hour later the same nurse came out and told you that the cancer had reached his heart.
