The Gates Of Heaven Were Locked Shut
I stand in the shower, letting the hot water take me away. I take a large whiff of my vanilla body wash and suddenly it’s like the last 3 years didn’t happen. I’m taken away to a happier time; a time full of hope. Any hope that I get now is the brief moment in the shower and that hope doesn’t last forever. It leaves just as quickly as it comes; in a blink of an eye you realize your world is gone along with your hope.
After my shower, I dry off and get ready for a night out. Usually people don’t walk the streets after six pm but I’ve got to. We ran out of supplies and this is usually when the stores are open; they have to open this late because the majority of their customers are just getting up at this time. There are only about thousand humans left in Los Angeles and most of us aren’t stupid enough to go out this late; and I do mean most of us. Usually I’m one of the people that stays fortified in their apartments, but like I said; I’m running dangerously low on supplies. Plus I’ve got a death wish.
I walk out of my apartment, pulling my leather jacket tight to my body as I walk the streets. I can hear the cackling of the female vampires and demons as they attempt to lure the human males to their doom along with the growls and whistles from the male vampires as I walk towards the store. I ignore the growls and calls as I quickly my pace in order to get away from them.
I finally get to the store and a sigh of relief escapes my lips when I see there are no vampires of demons roaming the isles. My shopping list is pretty easy. It’s just typical things like snack food and hygiene products like soap and shampoo. Some people think it’s stupid to risk your neck for something so stupid but I’m a girl; I like to be well fed and clean.
Just as I’m about to reach the checkout, the bells on the door chime. Out of habit, I lift my head up to look who it is. I can feel my heartbeats slow down and my muscles tighten. It’s Dante; a vampire I’ve dealt with numerous times. He’s clever, but stubborn; he also doesn’t like getting no for an answer. And here I am alone with no one to back me up. Dante sees me and smirks. “Hello Anna.” He suavely says as he walks over to me; gang not too far behind. “What brings you here?”
“Don’t act like you don’t know.” I snip at him before throwing enough money down onto the counter that’ll cover my items. “Now if you excuse me, I’ve got to get going.” I say as I throw my things into my bag and start towards the door; stopping when Dante grabs a hold of my bicep.
“Have you thought about my offer?” He asks.
I rip my arm from his grip before turning towards him; a glare on my face, “Yea I’ve thought about it and the answer is no. I rather die than become your bride. I’m going to cling on what little humanity I have left and go out the way I’m suppose to.”
“You rather die than have eternal life?” He questions, pushing some of my blonde hair away from my face. “You rather see wrinkles on your pretty face that stay young forever?”
“Is that such a hard concept to grasp?” I spit at him. “There is more to life than you think and being a vampire isn’t in the cards for me; never was.”
“Such a shame; such a waste of body.” He purrs as he walks closer to me; out bodies almost melting together. “You’re going to be so alone in this world; everyone you love is either dead or one of us. How does that make you feel Anna?”
“It doesn’t make feel anything but hatred towards you.” I growl before grabbing a hold of his shoulder to get my leverage to bring up my knee and knee him in the stomach. He falls to the ground and I begin to fight my way through his gang towards the door. Once outside I begin running, ignoring the shouting behind me. Once I feel like I’ve gotten away from them, I sneak into an alley way and lean up against the brick wall; my body sliding down until my ass hit’s the concrete. I can hear footsteps in the alleyway’s opening. I close my eyes and take in a deep breathe; praying they walk away. When they don’t, I begin to panic; especially when I can hear the footsteps getting closer. Tears begin to form in my eyes as sobs try to escape.
“You ok?” A deep voice asks. I open my eyes and see two men standing in front of me. Both are in all black; black leather to be exact. Both have some kind of pain on them; just in different designs. Both were oddly pale which causes me to frantically get up; shaking from fear. “Hey, we’re not here to hurt you.” He assures me. “I’m Andy and this is Jake; we’re humans just like you.” I look deep into his blue eyes, looking for tell-tale signs that he’s lying; he’s not. I loosen up a bit, causing the men to smile. “We’re here to help you.”
“I don’t need help.” I croak out. “I’ve done fine for the last 3 years.”
“No offense, we saw you back in the grocery store.” Jake chuckles. “You can’t do this all on your own; they’ll eat you alive.” I bite my lower lip; knowing he’s right.
“Come with us; you’ll be safe.” Andy assures me.
“Why should I trust you?” I ask. “How do I know you’re not going to take me straight to Dante?”
“We hate him almost as much as you do.” Jake explains. “Plus why would we be taking our time talking to you if we were just going to take you to him?”
“You’ve got a point.” I say, letting out a humorless chuckle.
“So will you come with us?” Andy asks.
“I guess; it’s not like it’s exactly safe for me to be alone now.” I reply. Andy grabs my bag while Jake puts a protective arm around me as we begin to walk out of the alleyway. I don’t exactly trust these guys; but they’re my only option…
