This Summer is Going to Suck

How it started

A cerulean eyed girl gazed blankly out the window, a cigarette held limply in her fingers. The girl saw nothing of the world going by as the car finally came to a stop. She took a deep breath and prepared herself for the long flight that would begin the worst summer of her life.

~Five Weeks Prior~

May stared at the letter in her hand, she wasn't sure she wanted to read it, but part of her was screaming at her that she had to read it. Had to find out why he finally decided to get in touch, had to know just what it was he had to say.

She walked into the small kitchen and put a pot of coffee going, she hoped the coffee would calm her nerves like it normally did. As she waited for the coffee to finish making she slipped into the back yard for a smoke, she took a long drag and slowly exhaled, watching the smoke drift away in the wind. She was lost in her memories, pulled into the past. A past she fought to forget.

A five-year old May sat sniffling on her bed, clutching her teddy bear tightly to her chest as she listened to her parents scream at each other. "I'm through. Be gone when I get back or I'll make sure you never see May again," her mommy screamed before the sound of the front door slamming reached her ears.
She didn't know why her parents fought all the time, all that she knew was that her mommy didn't like when her daddy was drunk. May didn't know what drunk meant, but when her mommy called her daddy that he seemed to be falling a lot and he was funny.
She began curling in on herself, wondering if there was time to run and hide in her closet when she heard footsteps head towards her room. Before she could hide, her door was opened and her dad walked in.
"Daddy," she whimpered, holding her arms out to him, curling into his arms as he lifted her.

"Hey my little angel," he said softly, "daddy has to say goodbye now."
"Why," May asked, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
"Because Mommy and Daddy don't love eachother any more," he replied, pressing a kiss to her forehead, "but I will always love my little angel," he said before he stood and walked out of the room.
That night May cried herself to sleep, praying that when she woke everything would be better and her mommy and daddy would be happy again.

May came back to herself as she felt a heat against her face, opening her eyes she screamed when her friend Cooper's face came into sight. "Cooper, what the fuck?" she swore as Cooper began laughing his ass off.
"Just came to see how're ya doing," he responded, following her into the house.
"I got a letter from my father," May said softly, setting the still unopened letter on the table before pouring two cups of coffee. She handed one to Cooper and took a sip from the other one, adding a bit of vanilla flavoring before drinking any more of it.

She and Cooper had been friends for most of school, and were often rumored to be together in some way, be it friends with benefits or a couple. But they never had been, though many knew Cooper wished May saw him as more than just a good friend. Cooper was the only person who knew all of May's issues, he helped her through everything he could, and he would do the same with this.
