The Reaper

But I'm Not Good.

Very early in the morning it was still dark when I awoke to a strange sensation. There was a body curled tightly next to me, leaning into me. My hands were around the body as well, holding it tightly to me. I realized it was Carolyn, and I sighed, gently removing my arms from around her and pushing myself away a little bit.

"You don't have to do that." I heard a whisper. I thought she was asleep.

"I don't have to do what?"

"You don't have to let go and push me away. I liked it, and it didn't hurt." She muttered.

"But I do. I am not good at the physical contact type things. I'm use to being alone. I apologize if I overstepped any boundaries last night while I slept." I explained. She sighed and her arm reached back and grabbed mine. She held my wrist and pulled it back to her hip. My eyes widened and I became confused.

"Just because you're use to being alone doesn't mean that you like it. Come on, please come cuddle again? You were warm, and it was soothing to feel your breathing." She whispered.

"We weren't cuddling. I just had my arms around you. That's all." I muttered.

"We were cuddling. Now come on Mourner... please?" She whispered, her voice cracking a bit in her tired state. I sighed knowing I'd lose this battle with her just like how I lost last night. I gripped her hips and gently pulled her back to me once again. She decided to roll over, and although she winced in pain, she ended up with her head on my chest, and her leg wrapped around one of mine. I furrowed my eyebrows and looked down at her.

"Are you alright?" I questioned, worried about her wings.

"Fine. A lot better now actually." She retorted.

"Why are you better? Didn't that hurt?"

"Yeah it hurt, but it's fine now. And better because I feel safer in your arms." She whispered. I looked down at the top of her head with wide eyes. I wasn't use to this type of contact.

"Why do you feel safer in my arms? That's the opposite of what I am use to..." I muttered. I caught myself playing with her hair a little, but instead of stopping like my instincts insisted, I continued, fighting off my impulses.

"I woke up in a new place, and I was scared, and I still am scared of many things... but you explained everything to the best of your ability to calm me down. You take care of me, and you trust me. You are the only one who I feel safe with in this strange place in the middle of this strange war. You saved my life, and you do your best to make sure I am not in pain and that I am comforted." She explained. I never realized I did all that for her, I mean... I was just trying to do what was best.

"It's just what anyone would have done. That's all." I muttered, not feeling comfortable with her saying all this good stuff about me. I was not good, and this was out of character for me. It was strange.

"No, not anyone would have. You're a good person Jake." She muttered.

"I am not good. I am far from good." I whispered coldly. I knew what I was, and she didn't.

"You are good, you just don't see it in yourself. You see what the humans see. You are good though Jake, and I guess it's gunna be my job to show you how good you really are." She whispered, her fingers tracing designs onto my chest. It felt strange to be this close to someone... but I enjoyed it more than I'd like to admit to myself....

"It'll be a difficult job, because it is untrue. I am not good. You will see. In the mean time, get some sleep Carolyn, we need to wake when the sun comes up soon. The Mystic says he's been working on something that he needs to show the rest of The Wild Ones. Something big that can help us gain new recruits." I whispered, gently playing with her hair. She sighed.

"Okay. good night Jake."

"It's morning, but alright. Sleep well Carolyn." I whispered. She sighed and I felt her relax into me, wrapping her legs tighter around mine, and nuzzled her head into my chest once more. I wrapped my arm around her, my hand resting on her hip. I was being as careful as possible not to hurt her wings, but it didn't seem to bother her. Soon she started breathing slower and deeper. I knew she was asleep. I looked down and gently brushed some hair from her face. She was so... innocent when she sleeped. It was as if she was never hurt, never scared. I never realized until now how beautiful she truly was.

No- what was I thinking? I really needed to get some sleep... that's what was happening, I had a lack of sleep and was losing control of my emotions. That was all. I pulled the blanket over us both, making sure she was well covered and I closed my eyes.

-----

"Jake... the sun's up." I heard a whisper. I groaned and brought my hands up, rubbing my eyes and stretching. I slowly opened my eyes to see Carolyn looking up at me. She was now almost ontop of me completely. Her leg in between mine, and mine in between hers. She was on her stomach, half on me, and half on the bed. She was smiling and her fingers traced shapes into my chest again. Sure- I wasn't human anymore, but I still had morning wood, and she was pressing right up against it. I hoped she couldn't feel it, it was embarrassing. This was why I never do this kind of thing.

"Okay. I'll change your bandages and then we can get dressed and go over to see what Jinxx has to show us." I muttered, moving a bit so that she wasn't right ontop of my morning wood.

"Jake?"

"Yeah?"

"What was that?"

"What was what?" I whispered, she blushed and bit her lip and looked down, hiding her face in my chest, then after a bit she looked up.

"What was that thing in between your legs that was hard? I felt it. I kinda liked it. What was that?" She whispered, still blushing. My eyes widened, I wish she hadn't said anything...

"Uhm... that's what happens when boys wake up. I thought you would've known that Carolyn... I mean, you seem to know a lot of stuff about earth and everything..." I muttered, a bit confused. She seemed like she was well accostomed to her human form compared to what you'd naturally expect.

"Well, that's because we have all that stuff in heaven... but we don't have the things betweem our legs up there. I'm sorry, I'm just curious." She muttered.

"Wait... so you don't have genitals?"

"Genitals? Is that the thing in between the legs? Hey- how come yours gets hard in the morning and mine doesn't?" She asked, and moved on top of my morning wood again which caused me to gasp.

"Uhm... well, I am a boy, so mine gets hard. You are a girl, so yours gets wet... they're different."

"Why are they different?"

"They're for reproduction... when a boys is hard, and a girls is wet, then the boy sticks his genitals into the girls, and then he releases his sperm into her, then the girl gets pregnant, and then they have a baby. But some people do it just because it feels good. They just use protection so the girl doesn't get pregnant." I explained awkwardly. This kind of came as a surprise to me.

"Oh, okay. Jake?"

"Yes?"

"Can I have sex with you? I want to feel good too."

"No Carolyn."

"What? Why not?"

"Becuase it's very intimate... it's something couples do."

"Oh... we aren't a couple are we?"

"No... we aren't."

"Oh. Okay."

"You ready to get up and let me change your bandages?"

"I guess..." She sighed. I changed her bandages, and we both got dressed. I had to help her, but soon we were ready. She could walk, but slowly and it hurt her a bit so I just picked her up and carried her, seeing as how we were a little late. We made it into the tent and the rest of the Wild Ones stared at us.

"Nice of you to join us." The Prophet muttered. I shot him a glare so he knew I was still upset with him.

"I apologize. It is difficult when taking care of an injured angel." I explained. The Mystic nodded, understanding my excuse.

"Okay, so what do you got Jinxx?" The Deviant asked. The Mystic smiled at us.

"I learned a new spell. A spell that allows humans to see us. Granted they'll only see us as human, and they'll have to believe our story... but it's something... right?" He smiled at us. We all turned and looked at The Prophet. He sat in the back with his hand on his chin, thinking.

"This is good. I need to speak with Eve. When will she be back?" The Prophet asked The Deviant, knowing that Chazona tends to come and go from camp more and more without a set schedule. Recently she's been on her own, and bringing back one or two soldiers at a time. It's been getting more and more difficult for her to convince others about our war, and to fight for us.

"I don't know. I think tonight, but it could be in the morning tomorrow." He explained. We all nodded and looked back at The Prophet for what he wanted to do next.

"Well, Jinxx, show us what you got. Maybe now our own soldiers will be able to see us." He muttered. I smiled, excited to be seen. Jinxx lit some candles and said a bunch of strange words that I didn't understand. Then he opened his hand and a flame appeared.

"Place your hands in the fire and it will be complete. It will not hurt." He instructed. The Prophet went first, and one by one we all stuck our hands into the flames. Nothing seemed different to us- after all, we could all see eachother before.

"Alright so now we wait for Eve to return. Everyone continue on training soldiers and helping out around camp." The Prophet ordered. We all nodded, and left. I still carried Carolyn in my arms. She had remained quiet during that whole experience.

As I walked outside, I noticed the soldiers who would normally look right through me staring at me with wide eyes.

"A-are you a new soldier?" Rayne asked. I smiled, it felt amazing to be seen.

"No... I am The Mourner, Jake. I am one of The Wild Ones." I explained with a chuckle.

"Wait... you guys....how can I see you?!"

"Calm down Rayne, it's alright. Jinxx figured out a spell so now humans can see us too." I smiled. She nodded, and soon said her goodbyes as she left to go train. I chuckled and carried Carolyn to the outskirts of camp, setting her down gently on a smoothed over rock.

"That was pretty wild back there..." She whispered. I nodded and sat down next to her. She leaned into me, and I sighed, gently wrapping an arm around her shoulders to keep her from faling over or sliding off the rock.

"Jake?" She whispered.

"Yeah Carolyn?"

"D... do you think maybe... maybe we could become a couple?" She squeaked, bringing back the conversation we had this morning. I sighed.

"As much as I'd like to, I don't think so." I replied.

"Why not?"

"Because I'm use to being alone. Besides, I'm not good." I muttered.

"Oh..." She sighed, looking down. I realized I had somehow wounded her, and I felt something inside of me drop when I realized she was upset from my words.

"Carolyn?"

"Yeah Jake?"

"I've never been part of a couple. I'm not good at romance, and I'm not good at being close to people. I'm terrible at knowing what to say, or knowing what to do... but I guess... I guess maybe if you help me with those things, maybe we can be a couple? In the future I mean... we need to focus on the war for now..." I muttered, realizing I was blushing.

I felt lips on my cheeks and gasped, then looked at Carolyn.

"I'm okay with that." She whispered
