You Saved Me

Sick Day

Ugh, I hate being sick! It fucking sucks! The guys come in periodically to check on me, but I usually don’t want or need anything when they ask. And even if I did, I could get up and get it myself. I’m sick, not crippled.
Anyway, moving on. Dahvie walks back and peeks in my bunk, then says, “Brought you something to make you feel better, Micro.”
I nod, then sit up, while he pours the red liquid into the little, clear cup, and passes it to me. I quickly down the contents, and then he’s passing me a bottle of water to wash the nasty taste from my mouth. I take it, and down half the bottle before coming up for air.
“Give it an hour or so to kick in, and let us know how you feel then, alright?” he says.
I nod, then he has me lay down again, and I murmur a quiet thanks to him. He tells me, “No problem. Now, get some rest.”
I nod again, then close my eyes, and drift off again.
When I wake up I can breathe again, and my headaches almost gone. I slide out of my bunk, slip my Misfit slippers on, then head out to the front lounge to find the Brides, my brothers, and Asking have all somehow squeezed their asses in here.
“Wow. You look like hell, Katie,” Danny says, actually trying for sympathy rather than humor, I think. I groan, then flop down on the floor, making sure to keep a bit of distance between myself, and the guys. Last thing they need is for my dumb ass to get them sick too.
“Thanks for the amazing compliment, Danny. Really makes me feel better about being around you guys,” I groan, then curl into a ball on the floor, and lean against the cabinet next to me.
“Oh, I wasn’t trying to kill your ego or whatever, Katie. I really concerned. We all are,” he tells me, and I nod in response.
“How do you feel, now, Micro? Did the medicine help any?” Jayy asked.
I close my eyes, then murmur, “I’m out here, aren’t I? But really, I do feel better, but not by much. Still feel like someone ran over me with a Mack truck.”
“You look it,” Ben says, “And unlike Danny here, that was a gab at your ego. Just to show you the difference.” I open one of my eyes, and glare a hole through Ben, making him laugh, then say, “Don’t kill me, now. I’m just stating a fact.”
“Go state your so-called ‘facts’ somewhere else. I’m sick, and I don’t need nor want your bullshit today,” I grumble unhappily at him.
“Ben, Katie, play nice now,” Andy says half-jokingly, half-seriously.
“Yes, mummy,” Ben says.
“Whatever,” I grumble, closing my eyes again.
“. . . Can hear you, Ash,” I hear CC’s voice cut in, through the fog. Guess I must have been half asleep.
“I’ll take her back to bed, then,” Ashley’s voice says, and I hear shuffling. To hell with it. I’m too tired to care too much about getting them sick now.
I feel Ashley’s familiar arms wrap around me, and he picks me up like a toddler. You know, like, one leg on each side, and his arm under my butt? Yeah, like that. I groan at the movement, and murmur, “I was comfy.”
I feel, more than hear, him chuckle, then he says, “You’ll be more comfortable in bed, than on the floor, sweetheart. Now, just relax. I got you.”
I sleepily nod, then rest my head on his shoulder. I then feel a sharp pain in my stomach, and struggle from Ashley’s arms, into the bathroom. I get in there, just in time to throw my guts up, but Ashley’s there in no time, holding me up, since I was starting to slouch into the wall.
He feels my forehead once I’ve stopped throwing up, and says, “Man, you’re burning up, baby.”
“Really?” I ask, “I feel like I’m freezing.”
He sighs, then shouts, “Jayy! Dahvie! Can you come here, please?”
A moment passes, then Jayy and Dahvie appear in the doorway, and look down at us. Ashley looks up at them, and says, “She’s got to be running an extremely high fever. Can one of you get the thermometer?”
Jayy says, “I’ll get it,” then walks away. Dahvie feels my forehead, and says, “Damn. Hope it’s not too high.”
I hear Ashley reply with a small, “Yeah,” before Jayy returns and says, “Open up.”
I open my mouth, then he sticks the thermometer in, and has me close my mouth again. A moment passes, and it beeps. He pulls it out of my mouth, then says, “Damn! I think we need to take her to the hospital, guys.”
Suddenly, I’m wide awake, and shaking like a leaf. Only, this time, it’s not because I’m cold. It’s from fear. I’ve hated hospitals, ever since my parents and I got in that accident that killed them.
The next thing I know, I’m being picked up by Dahvie, and taken out of the bus. He has Ashley get in the back seat, then lays me down, so my head is in his lap. Jayy gets in the driver’s seat, and Dahvie sits in the passenger’s.
“Please don’t make me go,” I beg Ashley.
He looks down at me, then sighs, and softly says, “We don’t have a choice, babe. I’m sorry.”
“Please. I hate hospitals,” I say, choking back tears.
“It’s not going to be like last time, kiddo,” Jayy tells me from the front seat.
“How do you know?” I demand weakly.
“Because the last time, it was an accident you were in for. This time, it’s a scary high fever. The most they’ll do is put an IV in you, and possibly put some ice packs on you to lower the fever,” Jayy explains, then adds, “We’re just trying to look out for you, Micro.”
“Whatever,” I growl, but settle down anyway.
When we arrive at the hospital, Dahvie heads inside, and reemerges with a wheel chair and a mask, just as Jayy and Ashley get me out of the car. Ashley helps me into the chair, then places the mask over my face, so I don’t spread whatever I caught.
Dahvie pushes the wheel chair into the hospital, then tells the receptionist what’s going on. She nods, then takes us back to a room, right away. Once in the room, Jayy lifts me up, and lays me on the bed, and a moment later a nurse and doctor enter my room.
“So, what is the problem?” the doctor asked the guys.
“Our sister, Katie, has a pretty high fever,” Dahvie explains.
“What was it the last time you checked it?” he asked.
“104.9,” Jayy says. Damn. Was it really that high? It’s amazing I’m still semi-with it then, if that’s the case.
“How long has she been sick?”
“No more than 14 hours,” Ashley tells him. Has he really been tracking how long I’ve been sick today? And if so, then why?
“Was it gradual, or sudden?”
“Sudden,” Jayy says, “We just came on the tour bus, and she was saying she wasn’t feeling well. We got her some over the counter stuff to help, but it hasn’t really done anything.”
The doctor nods, then says to the nurse, “I want ice on her, an IV of fluids in her arm, and blood work done to see what might have caused this.”
“Yes, sir,” she says, then gathers up what she needs, while Jayy and Ashley help me out of my sweater, leaving me in a white tank top. She cleans the area she’s going to stick me, then eases the IV into my arm.
She and the doctor leave the room, but the nurse returns with another nurse and a bucket of ice in little baggies. Ugh. I’m cold enough as it is, people, but go ahead and turn me into a Popsicle, I guess. They begin placing the ice packs around my body, and then the male nurse starts taking care of drawing my blood.
Ashley holds my hand through the whole ordeal, even though I’m not afraid of needles in the slightest. I patently wait, feeling a tremor of cold run through my body, every now and then, then letting the nurses continuously check my temp.
When it’s back under control, they remove the ice packs, but make me stay uncovered, even though I’m still cold as can be.
About an hour later, the doctor comes back in, and says, “It looks like she’s just caught a nasty bug. We’ll give her an antibiotic, then just make sure she gets plenty of rest, and she can take something to ease the symptoms of being sick, but only as directed.”
The guys nod, then Jayy helps me back into my sweatshirt, and back into the wheel chair. He wheels me out, while Dahvie sighs off for me. Ashley then says, “We’ll get you better, sweetheart.”
I nod, then we get to the car, and I lay down in the back with Ash again, for the ride back.
