I Promise You This Isn't Pain You're Feeling
Chapter One
Fifteen year old Sam Lyon slid her back down the cold hospital wall, until she was sitting on the ice cold floor. She pulled her legs inward, tucking her knees into her chest and wrapping her arms around them. It was a habit of hers -- whenever she was distressed, she tended to make herself as small as possible, as if she could protect herself by shutting out the rest of the world.
Inside the hospital room to her left, her mother was dying.
Christina Lyon had been fighting cancer for five years now, ever since Sam was ten years old. They had discovered the cancer when Christina had a miscarriage, losing Sam's younger brother or sister. Sam's parents had been heartbroken -- even more so after they discovered Christina's life-threatening condition.
Christina didn't know about it, but after she was hospitalized last year, her husband began to drink more and more. He began to take out his anger by physically and verbally abusing their daughter, Sam. Which was why Sam spent most nights sleeping on the couch in her mother's hospital room.
Sam buried her head in her knees and began to sob. The doctors had assured them that Christina would be gone by the end of the night.
Meanwhile, inside the hospital room, Christina clutched her husband's hand, pale and sickly. Her whole body shook, and her eyes looked hollow and glassy. She was fading fast.
"Henry." She gripped her husband's hand tighter. "When the time comes.... you should let Sam choose for herself."
Henry frowned. "Our parents chose for us."
Christina nodded. "But we got lucky. Most arranged marriages don't work out so well."
She was about to say more, but the monitor next to her began to beep, as if disturbed. Christina gasped as doctors flooded the room. She looked at Henry with those empty, hollow eyes.
"Tell Sam that I love her." She whispered.
And then she was gone.
