Three
A few seconds later the door of the bus swings open leaving a shirtless man in low cut black jeans, the word ‘Outlaw’ tattooed across his stomach, and a cowboy hat on top of his head, a smirk playing on his lips and his eyes gleaming playfully.
“Hello sir,” I say with a timid smile.
“You’re gorgeous, and perfect,” he says before beckoning for me to follow him onto the bus. I do so smoothly, not making a fool of myself thankfully in the murderously high heels. I clench the books against my chest a little tighter. “I’m Ashley, you’re here for Jake though, he’s getting married in a couple weeks.”
“Okay,” I say with a nod before following behind Ashley carefully to where there were four other guys sprawled out in a small living area.
“The girl is here!” Ashley announces as I walk in timidly behind him, gently biting my bottom lip as I hear a muttered ‘Jesus’ rush from somebody’s lips.
“Hi,” I say with a wide smile looking around at the four guys. “I’m Scarl...Scarlet,” I stutter softly as my eyes fall on a guy with brown eyes staring at me in shock as I carefully swallow against the painful lump in my throat as I desperately try to hide my slip up.
“Harmony?” the guy that looks so much like my cousin whispers as he sits up straighter in his seat, Ashley looking back and forth between us, a perplexed expression on his face. I close my eyes to hold back tears whispering.
“Please tell me you’re not Jake,” I struggle, desperately trying to not cry, my body trembling slightly.
“Harmony, dear god is that you?” he asks, unable to stand from his spot. I open my eyes, tears swimming in them making it impossible to see.
“I’m so fucked,” I whisper out.
“Uh, what’s going on,” a guy with bright blue eyes asks from beside Jake, clearly confused.
“That’s my cousin,” Jake states standing up.
“What’s your name sweetie,” I hear one say, looking to my left to see a guy with long black hair looking up at my curiously, a pair of drumsticks lying casually beside him.
“Scarlet,” I whisper softly.
“Your real name,” Ashley says, crossing his arms slightly as my shoulders slump.
“Harmony....Harmony Pitts,” I state as tears slowly began sliding down my cheeks a second before I am slammed into the tightest hug of my life. I drop the books and cling to the body wrapped tightly around me and let the tears free, my body trembling slightly.
“We thought you were dead!” I hear his voice whisper as he carefully sets us on the floor.
“I can’t believe it,” I hear the blue eyed one say. “Ashley, you got a girl...and she’s his long lost cousin. The fuck man.”
“Dude, I had no idea!” Ashley exclaims slightly. “I totally feel like an absolute sleaze ball right now for this but I also feel like a super hero, reuniting long lost family and shit.” His exclamations causing me to laugh against Jake’s shoulder as he pulls back to look into my eyes.
“I’ve had a lot worse than a pair of eyes looking over my body Ashley,” I say with a tear filled laugh, looking up at him.
“Where have you been for the last five years?” Jake questions urgently. “We thought you were dead!”
“I was ruining my life,” I say with a sigh and a shake of my head. “Jesus! It’s your bachelor party Jake!! You’re getting married?!?!?!?!” I exclaim in shock, bouncing slightly in excitement before taking the fake glasses off and laying them on the floor.
“Yes, her name is Ella. She’s an amazing woman, I love her more than life itself but you’ll meet her soon enough. Tell me what has happened with you in the last five years!”
“Jake, I can’t! You don’t know how hard it is never knowing what day might be your last, what person could be the person to kill you. I can’t tell you when after you leave I’ll be punished for not doing my job.” I say, looking down at the ground ashamed.
“What the fuck ever,” Jake states seriously before pulling me up to standing. “Take us to your apartment right now, you’re home Harmony, you’re not leaving me again. You’re not selling your fucking body anymore. You’re my cousin, my friend, my sister, and the girl who has had a shitty life. By god, that stops tonight!”
“Craig will kill me Jake, tonight is my first night for him.”
“What do you mean?” the one beside the guy with the drumsticks asks seriously causing a small sigh to slip from my lips.
“For the past five years I have been working for a pimp named Devon. He sold me last night to Craig specifically for this job. As nothing but street sluts we have no value, no worth other than what is between our thighs and how pretty our faces are. I met Devon during a dark period in my life...I was never able to get out from under his thumb...and when I did it was to somebody a million times worse than he ever could have been,” I explain with a subdued shrug of defeat. “I’m not worth the trouble it will cause Jake, believe me.”
“You’re worth a swift kick in the ass if you don’t drop that attitude missy,” Jake says, a scowl on his face. “Ashley did you tell him any of our information?”
“Nah man, just my first name and the need for a dancer for a bachelor party...other than that the only other way he could have found anything out is off the internet,” Ashley says with a shrug.
“Does he know your name Harmony?” the blue eyed one asks, his deep voice causing my skin to break out in goose flesh.
“No, he knows me as Scarlet Downy,” I say with a soft shrug.
“Settled then,” the quietest one states as he stands up and walks toward me. “I’m Jinxx by the way, that’s CC and Andy,” he introduces before pulling me into a warm hug. “Welcome home,” he states before walking out to the driver and giving him instructions before heading back as the other three guys give me a hug, Jake never leaving my side.
“I don’t want to be a burden,” I whisper nervously as Jake motions for me to sit down.
“You are not a burden,” he states, pulling my tightly against his chest as I sit down, the bus rumbling to life beneath us. “We are just going to grab anything you need and then we are out of here. You already paid the asshole right Ash?”
“Of course, it’s the only way to keep full names out of question,” he says.
“Thanks man, this is honestly the best bachelor present I could ever get.”
“Just call me Ashley, the accidental miracle worker,” he says loudly, puffing out his chest causing everybody to laugh.
“So now tell me, what have you been doing in the last five years and I don’t care how horrible and shitty it was, I want to hear it and I want to know it,” Jake states seriously, a stubborn arch in his brow causing me to sigh slightly.
“Well it started after dad got sentenced,” I say, leaning back against the couch, wrapping my arms around my bare stomach, ignoring the confused looks on the faces of the other guys. “I started spiralling, I couldn’t cope with my feelings then one night Janice, my old neighbor, gave me some weed and I lost myself. Anyways, after a few months I got into some harder shit and along the way I met Devon...Within two weeks he was treating me the same way dad had been for years..”
“Sleazy asshole,” Jake mutters under his breath causing me to stop talking for a second as I fight back my emotions, trying to stay as disconnected from the memories as possible.
“Anyways, after a while he convinced me to leave to work for him...I was high as a kite at the time...I think it was E or coke...regardless, I was a mess and agreed. Since then I’ve been his money whore, until yesterday when he sold me to Craig and here I am now.”
“Are you still on the drugs?” the one named Andy asked curiously.
“No sir, I’ve been clean for two years. Best thing I ever did for myself and the only thing I’ve been able to be proud of myself for.”
“Good for you!! Little warrior Goddess here!” CC states loudly, raising his drumsticks in the air. I smile and shake my head with a soft chuckle. The guys started talking amongst themselves as I leaned forward a bit feeling very self conscious of the little amount of clothing I was wearing. Jake rubs small circles against the bare skin of my back as I notice we pull into the dumpy apartment complex I live in.
“Jesus,” Jinxx whispers as the bus pulls to a stop. I sigh and stand up slowly.
“You guys don’t have to come in or anything...I don’t have much to grab...” I mumble, a little embarrassed about the state of my apartment, scratching the back of my hand in a nervous habit.
“Like fuck, it’s a wonder that you haven’t been raped here yet!” CC exclaims causing my shoulders to tense slightly as I look at Jake who shakes his head. Our exchange noticed by everybody else. “Wait...you haven’t been raped right?”
“Not here I wasn’t,” I sigh out before shaking my head and forcing a small smile. “Another story for another time...I’m about to get evicted anyways so I don’t have to warn the landlord.”
“Fuck,” CC mutters, hugging me softly. “I’m so sorry, I was so insensitive. “
“Dude, chill,” I chuckle. “How would you have ever known? It’s not something most people talk about. I’ll explain at some point I’m sure, or Jake will...whichever,” I shrug before tugging the back of my skirt down a bit as I head off the bus, closely followed by the five guys who were now completely quiet as we walk in the front doors of my apartment complex.
