We Will Be Unbroken

I struck the glass, there's shattered bones in my fist

"Ooh! Story time!" Jacky exclaimed and Ronnie shot him a look. "What? I've never heard about your past, Ronnie."

He looked at Jacky, then at Marilyn. Both had expectant looks on their faces.

Ronnie sighed. Oh, okay..." He cleared his throat and then began. "I was born one morning in December on the coldest day..." And then he broke out into song.

Abandoned by my mother, by my father I was raised. My father raised my brother and I with a stubborn heart. My mother left me her good looks and confident charm. Well, I-

"Stop." Marilyn said. "That's 'The Westerner'."

"So? It's my story."

"I want to hear the story as a story. Not a song."

Ronnie groaned. "Oh, fine. When I was younger, my mother left us. I don't know where she went, or why she left. When I was a teenager, I tried to find her. But when I couldn't, drugs became my best friends. I did all those through high school and by the time I turned twenty-one, I was out of control. I was hooked on that shit."

"What about jail? Why did you go to jail?"

"Well... Let's just say my shit friends had something to do with that."

Marilyn could see Ronnie was uncomfortable with talking about it. His face began to contort into a pained expression.

"What are you thinking about?"

"Everything. Dammit, everything. How I don't deserve a girl as amazing as you or a band as great as this. About my old shitty friends and... and my fucking... my fucking mother! I hate her, Marilyn! I hate her!"

She tried soothing him but he just kept getting more and more worked up. She had never seen Ronnie this angry. He pulled his fist back and Marilyn immediately ducked out of the way. But he didn't punch her, nor intend to punch her. He sent his fist right through the bus window.

"Ronnie!" Jacky and Marilyn exclaimed in unison.

Ronnie was collapsed on the floor, holding his right hand in his left.

"Ronnie, are you okay?" Marilyn knelt down next to him.

He shook his head gently.

"Alright, Jacky. Help me get him up." Marilyn said.

They helped Ronnie off the floor and brought him to the hospital. After all the standard procedures and x-rays, the doctor had told him he had broken three of his knuckles. Marilyn couldn't help but think about when they first arrived at the hospital though.

"Name please." The secretary behind the desk, said.

"Ronnie. Ronnie Radke."

"Okay, Mr. Radke. I have two things for you. One: When was the last time you were here?"

"January 12th, 1990."

"Thank you. And two: Will you sign this for me?"

"Uh, sure?"

"It's for my niece. She's a big fan."

Ronnie had known the exact date of the last time he was in a hospital. Marilyn wasn't sure if that was important or not but she wanted to ask Ronnie about it later. But maybe, that may not be a good idea after all.

"Way to go, idiot." Marilyn said.

"You thought I was going to hit you, didn't you?"

"Well... Yeah. Every man in my life has hit me. Every man except you."

"That's because I'm different than them. I would never hurt you in any way."

"Aww!" Jacky gushed. "That was beautiful."

Ronnie and Marilyn laughed.

"So," Ronnie said.

Marilyn and Jacky looked at him.

I struck the glass. There's shattered bones in my fist! Ronnie quoted.

"Or..." Marilyn said. I struck the glass and broke the bones inside my fist but I'm okay!

Everyone laughed.

"Oh, song references." Marilyn said.

"So, who's getting hurt next on this tour?" Jacky asked. "That seems to be quite a reoccurring theme."

"I say you, Jacky." Marilyn joked.

"I bet it's Andy. You know he's always getting hurt." Ronnie said and Jacky agreed.

As they walked out of the hospital, an ambulance had pulled up and was pulling a stretcher out of the back. Tons of paramedics surrounded the stretcher so it was difficult to see the person on it but it looked like a girl.

"Poor girl." Jacky commented. "I wonder what happened."

Once they were a good distance away from the hospital, Jacky's cell phone started to ring.

"Ello?" He answered. "What? Who's hurt?...Oh, no... Okay, we'll be right there. Goodbye."

Jacky looked up at Ronnie and Marilyn. All he said was "Looks like we were all wrong."

But someone is still hurt.
