Liquid Harmony

Chapter 2

Andy groaned as the light creeping in from his blinds fell across his face, waking him up. He squinted against the bright light, rolling over to block out the painful rays. The thought of getting up, let alone going to band practice, made his head pound. It wasn’t the thought of having to sing again, or being around his best friends. Amps and hangovers don’t mix well, he knew from experience. Rubbing his eyes, he stepped out of bed and crossed the room to his dresser. He pulled open the bottom drawer and pulled out a pair of pants and a shirt at random, tugging them on. He wasn’t in the mood to be fashionable. His hand caught at the delicate silver chains of the two lockets around his neck. He had almost forgotten about that. He fumbled with the tiny clasp and removed Olivia’s locket, carefully opening the drawer and setting it back into its box. He sighed and pushed the drawer shut before a new rush of memories could flood his mind. Making his way through the quiet apartment to the door, he grabbed his car keys and decided to skip breakfast.
When Andy pulled up to Jinxx’s house, he recognized his friends’ cars parked in the driveway. He was the last to show up. He let himself into Jinxx’s house and showed himself to the basement the band had turned into their practice area. With opening the door came the sound of laughter and CC’s drums. He ducked as to not hit my head on the low beams on the ceiling above the staircase. Everyone looked up as he entered.
“About time!” Jake joked, slapping him on the back as he walked by. “Where’ve you been?”
“Sleeping,” Andy said as he grabbed the mic off the top of an amp. “Did I miss anything?”
Not really.”
From one look around, Andy could tell that this had been one of those practices that resulted in little to nothing productive. A couple of empty chip bags lay discarded around the room, and it seemed that at some point a small food fight had erupted. He was kind of disappointed he had missed out on the fun.
Ashley sat in the corner, draped across the leather couch, his nose buried in his phone as he texted some girl.
“Another whore?” Andy asked, putting the mic back down and walking over to where he was.
“No, this one’s actually a nice girl. I met her last weekend at a strip joint.”
CC came over baring his drum sticks in one hand and a bottle of beer in the other. “Yeah, Ashley ended up with my woman.”
Ashley laughed menacingly as he returned to his phone. “I can’t help they want a ride on this disco stick.”
CC stuck his tongue out at the bassist. “I bet I’ll pick up a good one on this tour.”
Andy cocked an eyebrow. “I miss half a practice and you guys have already planned an entire tour?”
“Oh, you didn’t know?” Jinxx asked, coming over to where the rest of the band was sitting.
“No, this is the first time I heard about it.”
“Jon got us on Warped. We figured you’d be pumped.”
Andy smiled at his band mates. “Yeah, that’d be fun.”
“It’s going to be awesome,” Jake piped up from where he was fiddling with his guitar, the only one of them who was still making an attempt at being productive. He began playing the intro to one of the songs they had written recently together.
Tour would be good. This band was basically all Andy had left. It wasn’t like there was anything left for him in the city. If they were going, he’d willingly follow. He began to get excited the more he thought about it. He wouldn’t have to be surrounded by memories of Olivia constantly. The spot in his room where she’d always change, or how she’d stand at the stove and cook breakfast, lunch or dinner. She wouldn’t be so present anymore. No more waking up to an empty apartment by himself and going to sleep every night alone. Not that he planned on picking up any band girls, but he’d have his friends around him constantly. He’d even be reunited with guys from bands he hadn’t had a chance to see since last summer.
“So you’re in?” Ashley asked from the couch, resting his cellphone on his stomach as he looked up towards Andy.
He nodded in response, his smile spreading further across his face. “When do we leave?”
“The first date is in L.A, so we technically don’t have to leave for another week,” Jinxx said.
It hit him that he would really be leaving, that he’d be gone for the majority of the summer. Olivia’s things would sit there in a lonely apartment while he was gone. It felt too much like moving on for him to accept it. He began to wish that he had left her locket on for security. Slipping his own beneath the neckline of his shirt, he tried to push the negative thoughts out of his head. This would be good for him and he knew it.
“The first show is next Friday.”
Andy nodded. “We’ll meet here Friday morning, then.”
The band agreed and the room fell silent for a few rare moments before CC spoke up. “Well, who wants to go celebrate?! It’s not like we’re getting shit done anyways!”
Everyone looked at each other for a moment before a chorus of agreement broke out, and the band began shuffling out the door.
